Did you ask your current provider? What network are you on and plan on going to?

If you broke a contract you would have to jailbreak. Back in the day ATT could not go into CDMA networks.

It will be black listed by AT&T so you will have to pay some IMEI unlock service if they still exist. Borderline.

HI LA. If you have your original proof of purchase that shows the IMEI (or FCC ID) and the phone's serial number, make a genius bar appointment and show them the phone and paperwork. They should be able to unlock the phone on the spot or submit a request for you.

Even on blacklisted IMEI? They never used to.

The IMEI would only be blacklisted if the early termination fee was not paid. Right?

I'm not sure if this holds true to your particular model of iPhone but some phones don't have the hardware to connect to different networks. ATT is GSM and Some don't have the hardware to connect to the Sprint CMDA networks. You may want to ask at an Apple Store or even a "we fix iPhones" store if your phone can even work on the sprint network.

Red Dog - Yip. LA says he bumped his contract so will be blacklisted. KozmoWeb - indeed. Think that still held true on that model.

In the UK some networks allow you to buy yourself out of a contract and have the phone unlocked. Whether it is financially viable or not depends on your circumstances, but the phone may have more value, even if you sell it, if it is not blacklisted. Usually your original supplier will unlock if you ask nicely before you move away from them & have their sim in the phone when you start the process. Sounds like it mostly depends on what you mean by "broke my contract".
