Happy International Woman’s Day 2014!

Wishing all our Women of Buzztouch a Happy Woman’s Day! If you haven’t liked our Facebook page yet, today would be a good day to do so ;-) https://www.facebook.com/buzztouchwomen Girls and women around the world are avid users of technology, but they are significantly underrepresented in its creation. If you want to read more about why this matters, check out this link. http://www.ncwit.org/infographic/3435

Girls, given half the chance, are as keen as guys to get involved in this world of technology. I am convinced of it now that I am giving a basic computer science course at my son’s elementary school. Here is an email I received last week from one of the girls in the class, she is 10 years old: Hello Derval, I have always wanted to be a fashion designer when I grow up, but since I have started your course in "One Hour of Code" I've decided I want to learn computer science and this world of code. I really like the computer and I want to discover every secret of programming! Fashion design will remain a hobby for me.. maybe I could even combine this passion with computers.. who knows! See you Thursday at your lesson, I cannot wait! How cool is that! A future woman of buzztouch! ;-)

Dervalo, I always thought it was awesome to see such a sizable community of women on buzztouch, and am stoked to see you all post about it too. I attended a ton of Computer Science classes in two different colleges a few years back, and I don't remember seeing ONE woman in those classes - even for microsoft word! Keep up the great work with "Women Of Buzztouch" and stay classy. :-) Cheers! David.

Happy Day! Well noted. That infographic page is a thought-turner. The one that struck and puzzled me is "Talk with girls and others about unconscious biases and how to handle them." So that I can be more aware and take appropriate actions, what are those hidden biases? -- Niraj

Niraj- Thank you for questioning this. We all have biases and things I use to say growing up as a kid I am finding are just not cool with some cultures and I feel so foolish So I appreciate you just asking hey what are they? A great book and study I would love to share with everyone is Blindspot http://spottheblindspot.com/the-iat it reveals a lot of hidden biases. The women in tech movement may sound to many and even myself at first a bit controversial However, I personally come across daily to biases consider coding that are subtle to in your face. - not to put the person on the spot but was I was even told this on the forum "this as awesome as bringing me cookies" -like I cook! Ha! The best advice anyone is just ask! Ask your daughter what she has gone through you might be surprised. Quiz them on their thoughts. Derval has the best story about teaching 5th graders coding and the little girl coming up to her and saying hey I was going to be a fashion designer and now I am really considering becoming a programmer! My thoughts are this kid just wasn't exposed to choices until her class My choices growing up were vastly different than the girls today. It is my hopes we are sensitive to everyones biases coming into this new millenium We all just need to sensitive and educated about how the other person may be feeling all about connection :) Hope this helps!

Niraj, I just heard one interesting comment from a guy once as to why there weren’t more women in computer science and he reckoned women’s brains, being wired differently to men’s, just weren’t as capable at mastering cs.. well if you ask me, that's bs!!!
