Land Rover InControl Apps

This looks pretty cool - wondering if I can make something for it using BT as my Dad's car has the RR InControl apps on it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ugp2lBTDJrY Ed

It's pretty cool, however (as always with technology) the Japanese got there first a few years ago with the Leaf app.

Honestly, I don't think so. It would require an internet connected car and some a very complex way of communicating with the car. Then the car would need to know what signals do what. However, all the app is really doing is sending a signal to the car. For all we know, the app just sends an email to the car. The complex stuff happens in the car, because the car sends back the data to the app. Think of it like request and receive. The app requests info, and the car sends back the info. I think the Leaf app is more impressive, because you can actually control certain things inside the car remotely, such as the heating. This means that the car can act upon the signal being sent to the car, not just send back data. It really does have to be done to a brand new car from the showroom, not a 10 year old Toyota, and to be honest, why not just pay the extra addition for the blokes at Land Rover to develop it for you. Buzztouch would be capable of making an app to send the signal to the car, and it might be capable of receiving the data, however this is only step one. You would then need to get the car connected and set-up, which is by far the biggest task.

It is just a standard 'iPad' app and I only want to develop it for my vehicle really. It has internet built in and as far as I know (or, what I've been told) it should be 'pretty standard developing'. But I guess we will find out when we get official documentation.

Modern cars already have software on the dash. In order to obtain the info that the car is displaying on the dashboard, you'd need to change the software so it would send a signal. It's a pretty impossible task, to be honest, as it would require re-writing some code for the dashboard display. It's something that only the manufacture should be playing around with, however if you want to create a 3rd party add-on, and you have a few years in hand, it's a business that would make millions.

It's probably an iteration of the CarPlay SDK: https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/

Look quite similar compared to a demo I got today. The SDK is released soon so then I can get going on it!

Ahhh... I see what you were asking about now! You wanted to use a version of your apps in the car. I thought you meant you wanted to recreate the system in the car so you could add this system into any car. I believe that an SDK for CarPlay is coming out, but remember that an SDK for the Apple TV has been long-rumoured.

Yeah Thomas! Land Rover say it will be released by 2015, but what I've seen today looks much like a themed version of CarPlay

CarPlay is definitely the way to go with this technology, and not just stick with Land Rover. In fact, Land Rover look like they're implementing CarPlay in the future anyway, which sort of kills their own system. Bad move on Land Rover!

I think their system is just a CarPlay system with a theme. I think this is them implementing it... The demo had loads of the apps in the CarPlay video which kind of assures me of this

I would think since Tata's purchase of Land Rover the somewhat slow pace of change that Rover has been famous for will pick up to a more normal speed approaching that of a well caffeinated snail, and that would be much improved I'm sorry to say. I'm going to have to agree. As far back as I can remember, there has been a Freelander, Discovery or RR on the driveway... The reason I said land rover exclusively!
