Google now urges you to consider Android Studio right from the start

On page for downloading Eclipse and ADT, now stands the following info: ===== Get Android Studio Beta Android Studio is a new IDE powered by IntelliJ that provides new features and improvements over ADT. It's currently in beta but will be the official Android IDE once it's ready. If you're a new Android developer, you should consider starting with Android Studio, because the ADT plugin for Eclipse is no longer in active development. ===== This was expected, however, this is also the first time that I see it as an official recommendation.

The page in question is, of course, this: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

Anything is better than eclipse. Even the command line.

Except that BT packages don't quite work out of the gate with Android Studio (at least I haven't been able to get it to). They use a new Gradle compiler, and I think the structure of the project is expected to be different than when imported into Eclipse ADT. Still slogging through the details. Mark

@Northwest take your BT project and import it into eclipse and then export it as a grade package then open it in Android Studio. I have done it differently in the past and upload a BT project to google play. I will reopen android studio this week end and post what I remember from my past success Joe

Hi Joe, Yeah, that might work! But, I also want to figure out how people who don't have Eclipse would get it to work. Otherwise, if you're going to use Eclipse to export to Android Studio, you may as well just stick with Eclipse! But, indeed, that is a workaround. Mark

Yeh I get that. What I was saying is that I figured it out in the past and I will look at it this weekend to see if i can help shed light on the situation

This mentions Joes approach https://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/migrate.html Then this one says you can import directly into android studio and it will convert it to gradle. http://tools.android.com/tech-docs/new-build-system/migrating-from-eclipse-projects Well now that I skim through them again they both say the same ha

It's awesome to see all of this interest in Android! Thank you for working on this. I won't cry any crocodile tears for eclipse.

The problem I've found is that while it will import, the Gradle conversion leaves it in a state where it has errors and won't compile. Still working through that! It's an improvement from earlier versions when it wouldn't even import. Mark

This all sounds quite promising. My 3rd (at least) download of Eclipse has crashed and won't work - again! Going to give Android Studio a bash.

I was going to ask which version of eclipse to install but now I won't bother and take a look at Android Studio. But being new to this I know I'm looking for trouble :)
