RD Simple GeoFence Plugin released.

My new plugin is now available in the market. This splash screen plugin allows iOS users to receive a GeoFence notification when your app is minimized or even when it is CLOSED! "RD Simple Geofence" uses local notifications, so no third party push service subscriptions are needed. Demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=cNJaOzVuyWs Plugin here: https://www.buzztouch.com/plugins/plugin.php?pid=643CC9748123BC43B1339AF Thank you.

Thanks Cake. Keep in mind that this will just launch your app from any of the geoFences you setup. It will not launch specific pages in your app. It might work well with Smugs Location Menu as the home screen with your list sorted by distance though. And, this is geoFencing and not iBeacons. Your museum pieces would need to be 50 meters apart ;-)

Why is there no sound on the YouTube video? In what context are you using geoFences?

@Nicks App. No sound 'cause no body wants to here me rambling on and on ;-). Context? Personally I am using geoFences in a real estate app to alert buyers whenever they are near a listing.

That's an amazing use of geoFence. I should look into that for my Travel Map App. Is that something that users would activate on a per-location basis? I'm using David's free Location Map. Would activating geoFence be an additional menu option to the callout bubble activated when tapping on a marker pin? I also kind of like the Cubby Holes Plugin - and again I would want to activate it from the callout bubble for the location. I'm up to 4-5 menu items I would like to add to that poor callout bubble! I make explainer videos using iMovie - which is free with Mac OSX. Because I like to travel, my desktop is a Mac Mini, which start at $600, add your own monitor. I outline what I am going to do on paper, use QuickTime to screen-record the mouse actions, then in iMovie, I trim any video flubs, delays or changes-of-mind. Then while playing back the video in iMovie, I audio record the narration in QuickTime. Match the audio and video tracks, and export to YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9y2lF66VcQ

Barry, this is excellent! I love the idea of sneaking things in via the Splash Screen. Never thought about that. I was also looking into Local Notifications over push. Just seems logical. Great work! :) Cheers! -- Smug

Hey Can we make more then five geofences locations using json? The control panel limits you to five.

iOS will store up to 20 locations. The code and CP can be customized to do this, but I have not tested with more than 5.

Hey Red Dog, just purchased the plugin yesterday (really excited) and started to play around with it - Just had a quick question , you said it works with local push notifications (are you referring to the push notification panel in the buzztouch area?)

Hi Chris. No, it uses local notifications, not push. With push, you can send a message to devices at any time. My plugin uses local notifications. They are triggered by an event on the phone. In this case, the notification is triggered by the phone coming within range of a lat/long position that you have given to it. In the plugin control panel you can specify the message, but it is the same for all geopoints and you cannot send the message any time you want.

It is working perfectly! Red Dog, the plugin rocks lol. This is exactly what I needed. Really going to play around with it a bit and see how far I can push it in terms of locations. As for the video, I watched it all the way through lol.

Newbie question here, your plugin is ios only - is this because it can't be done in android, or because it's "out of the box" in android?

When you look at the plugin in the market, be sure to look for both icons (apple and android) and it will indicate whether the plugin is for one, the other, or both. This particular plugin is iOS only. Cheers! -- Smug

Yes, I got that. Just wondering why :) There's lots to take in and still getting to grips with the differences between the platforms.

I won't say iOS is easier; it really depends on the task. However a lot of developers go that way because up until now, statistically there has been more money in iOS. For me I feel it's a lot easier to make things look nice in iOS than in Android. Both languages (Java, ObjC) are 'C' based languages, but it's like saying Spanish and Italian are both derived from Greek. Close enough to look similar, different enough not to be the same. Learning the nuances of both can be challenging at times. But that's just my opinion. Your mileage may vary ;) Cheers! -- Smug

Hi Sarah. The reason my plugins are iOS only is simple. I don't know the first thing about Android coding, and between my day-job and weekend-honeydo's I will never get the time to figure it out :-)
