GeoMoby SDK - IBeacon & Geofencing Webinar

Hi All, We are a BT SDK partner specialised in outdoor/indoor geofencing. Our technology uses all the smarts of your device's sensors (Wi-Fi, GPS, accelerometer, GSM triangulations...) as well as iBeacon support. Our tech includes super battery efficient algorithms, a web API and has been designed to be integrated in your app in just a few hours. We are organising our first webinar with the BT community this week on Tuesday, April 1, 5:00 PM Pacific (which for UTC is Midnight between Tuesday, April 1, 2014 and Wednesday, April 2, 2014) Proposed agenda : - Fresh start with an app downloaded from the BT platform - Android SDK integration in Eclipse using our installation guide - GeoMoby dashboard presentation - Creating and managing geofences and microfences (iBeacons) - Quick Web API presentation - Q/A Next webinars will demonstrate how to use our iOS SDK and web API. You can also start now using our documentation here and support team: https://geomoby.com/admin/doc/ Link: https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/958642941 Hope to see you all this week! Do not hesitate to ask questions if any. -Chris GeoMoby CEO

Thanks for scheduling this! Sounds excellent. Very interested in the Android side of this. I just dabbled with some iBeacon Android source recently. It seems to work just as well as NFC but I think iBeacon has more potential, esp if it works with OLDER Android OS's like 3.x

Hi Atrain53, We spent quite a few days to make sure that our Android SDK supports iBeacons. One of the main issues we faced is around reliability of the distance estimation. The distance estimate using RSSI (Received Strength Signal Indicator) is just an estimate, and fluctuations with noise on signal strength measurements cause the estimates to jump and dip... One option is to smooth the RSSI readings by getting a bunch of them in a short period of time and calculate the average. On Android, the Bluetooth LE Scan API only allows a single signal strength measurement per scan. On iOS, it is possible to get a different measurement for each advertisement broadcasted and that explains why reliability is higher on iOS devices. Even by changing the advertising interval (by default, 200ms), the Bluetooth LE Scan API will still get one measurement per scan. The best way is to calculate the unique path loss constants of your indoor environment and use polynomial curve fitting techniques in order to provide more reliable readings. We are currently running a set of tests and we'll post the results on our blog soon. BLE support for Android has been introduced from Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean MR2) ONLY which means that devices with an older Android version won't be able to use iBeacon technology. Only 12-13% of the devices are running 4.3+ (http://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html?utm_source=ausdroid.net) but we expect a huge jump this year as all new devices runs with the latest Android version and Google has great plans to fight version fragmentation.

Definaltely the same lesson I'm learning with iBeacons when you actually test them in the real world. This stuff has to be accurate and work flawlessly before you can use it in a production enviroment. Working with different 'actions' based on the range works much better in theroy than actual results. I'm curious to tinker with iBeacon on the Android platform for sure. I've been looking at some of David Youngs code from Radius Networks and he's been a great resource. See you guys later this afternoon :)

Bummer, just realized that your time for this is not what I thought- >>>Tuesday, April 1, 5:00 PM Pacific I though that was 5PM PST, which would have been 3PM CST. I was just told this is actually 7PM CST, which I can't attend :(

Unfortunately, I had to miss the webinar. Will it be available either on the Buzztouch site or elsewhere?

I don't know if 'GeoMoby' is still supported (although that would be up to GeoMoby) but I do know Apple still supports iBeacons. I have a custom app for a company here that uses beacon technology to inventory vehicles and locations. Those beacons are setup as 'generic' iBeacons, so no fancy SDK is required. Cheers! -- Smug
