My One Year BT Anniversary

I'm in a really scary position. So many people to thank, and I'm afraid to mention anyone, because I'm afraid of forgetting someone. I truly don't want to offend anybody, so I'll just say this: Thank you everyone in the Buzztouch community who has ever posted a single word. You may be the worlds gift to programming, or you may not have the first clue what's going on. But I learn from each and every one of you, whether you realize it or not. There are the obvious methods, like Kittsy's sample code, or David's explanations of things, but there are also the inexperienced folks asking questions that I don't know answers to. Everyone in this community is happy to contribute, and their answers to questions often help me out down the road when I get in the same situation. I grew up dirt poor, and if something breaks I either fix it or find out why it can't be fixed. After a bad experience with a freelancer contractor, I figured I may as well learn Mobile if I was going to want a mobile app for my own business. I found Buzztouch and I couldn't be happier. It has way too many plusses, and very few minuses. My first app was for a friend, to allow me to figure out some of this app making stuff, and after that it's been different directions to help me get closer to my goal, which is a navigational based app that will act similar to your vehicle GPS. For both Android and iPhone. I must be a masochist. In 'the real world' I own a small company on Guam. I created Garmin GPS Compatible Maps for the island of Guam (and the CNMI, the Republic of Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia.) and I rent out GPS units to tourists and business people via their car rental agency. We're just starting our third year, and I'm happy to say with each month comes more growth. However, it's still a one man operation, and I look like a duck: Calm on the outside, but underneath I'm paddling as fast as I can. I appreciate everyone in the BT Family. Genuinely good folks. Cheers! -- Smug

Way to go Smug! And I personally want to thank you for publishing your code in these forums. Your "apps with maps" code is what shed the necessary light for me on how to program for JSON in particular and Buzztouch in general. Without that example, there would be no my "Kindle to Android app" web app, which allowed me to publish five apps in two days. Several guys and gals here should really have a badge like "Buzztouch treasure" and if they ever create it, SmugWimp should be one of the first two or three to get it. I have my own dream app, the one that I am doing all this for. I see you have your own dream app too. May all of our dream apps come through!

Great post Smug, happy anniversary! I absolutely cannot believe you have been in BT just 12 month, why does it feel like it feels you have been helping us for years? You are one of the gems in the BT community, you have helped me and many other many many times. Thank you again. It's great to read about your background story, I wish you plenty of good things and great success in Guam (and outside of the island too!). Farcat

And Smug, can I also thank you. Your plugin came to my rescue when I needed to make an App for a University course I was doing on Mobile Application Development - a subject I knew virtually nothing about, and now I am staring down the barrel of posting my app on the Apple App store only a few short months later. And the hour and a half that you spent on Skype with me on a Sunday night to help me get my app to work was truly legendary. A true gentleman! I wish you all the best, and may the next 12 months be totally fabulous. Tim (Sydney)

Smug, great story, I think you will be fine, you clearly are ambitious and extremely motivated. Its great that BT has so many inspiring stories and although I have never been able to offer you help, I hope at least I contribute by trying to create inspiring apps. Good on you and all the best for the future. In fact I would like BT to start a business to business networking meet ups as I think there are more opportunities within BT than we realise. There are so many fantastic characters.

Great Story Smug, knowledge empowers us all to do great things. The ability to teach ones self new things is very powerful. But to gain the knowledge from others in a community such as this is just down right AWESOME. Here's to another year! -Ed

Smug you are the man. That is all. No,wait, a wee bit more. I've said it before - I believe quite recently - but your ability to inject humour into the forums while also offering assistance that is second to none is true talent. May only be a year but I cannot imagine the place without you and your awesome avatar. Having folk like yourself around adds something to BT than cannot be replicated. There can be only one SmugWimp. Happy Birthday and Friday my BT bro. First whisky is on me.

Well it has been a pleasure to know you. Has it really been only one year? That's what I call zero-to-hero! I can't believe that the second biggest contributor to the forums has been around for only a year. MacApple has been here for three whole years, and it feels like he's always a round, yet he's only third! Good luck with your next few years to come.

You have taught us that magic happens in Guam while we sleep here in the States. No problem has been too tough for Smug. I learned and realized that other external databases could be connected into BT through your code samples. A Google search of BT and Smug usually reveals a treasure trove of insights! Happy days. :-) -- Niraj

Hey Smug...Want to say thanks for helping me personally and through your many posts. I met you and assumed you had been around longer than a year...a through self taught thoroughbred! Speaking of ducks... other than the obvious you mentioned, the duck is one of the most tenacious...... when placed: 1- On wter it swims 2- On land it walks 3- In the air....it flies! Your flight awaits you Smug! Happy Anniversary.
