Comparing Macbook Air vs. Macbook Pro with Retina Display

I'm getting a new laptop this week and wanted to know what people's opinions are between the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro with Retina Display (the one that came out this past week). Right now, they're the same price once adding everything onto the computer that I plan on having (For example, if I were to get the Air, I would upgrade it from 4 GB of RAM to 8 GB). Essentially, this is coming down to the fact that the Pro has 2 Thunderbolt 2 ports, an HDMI, 2.4 GHz processor and the retina screen; the Air has the thinness and lighter weight by half a pound, but it only has 1 Thunderbolt 2 port, no HDMI ports, no retina display and a 1.7 GHz processor. I was wondering, does anyone have experience with either and know if Xcode will still work well with the Air? Out of all the things I do on the computer, Xcode probably would need the most processing power, and I want to make sure I don't make the wrong choice and then end up having a slow computer when I'm making apps. Thanks so much, David

Get the pro. Get the pro. Get the pro. Did I mention I think you should get the pro? Xcode works fine with the MBAir, but when it comes down to it, unless you travel 'a lot', a half a pound isn't enough to consider, and the extra ports and processing will make a difference sooner than later. If you can, beef up the RAM. I maxed mine out and couldn't be happier. Cheers! -- Smug

The Macbook Air can handle Xcode with ease, I developed iOS apps on a Macbook Air for over a year. BUT, in my opinion, screen size is the real deciding factor here. If the 15 inch MB Pro is in your budget then I would go for that one. While the MB Air worked fine for me performance wise, I found the 13 inch screen to be a little inconvenient at times

I think it comes down to mobility, I have a home iMac for big screen stuff and Photo Shop editing etc. So I have a Air for mobility and convenience of using it all over the place (at home too). Since getting my Air I hardly use my iPad now. Its just so light and convenient. A good cobination would be a MB Air and iPad mini now with retina :) I have made about 20 apps all on my air and clever use of things like dropbox etc help you manage space needs. Talking about 15 inch, I had a look at it in store this week, and nice as it is screen size and retina etc, it really feels like it weighs a tonne compared to the Air, it is a big difference. So it all depends on how plan on using it. Either way you can't lose ;) Enjoy

I use both. I use my MacBook Air 11 inch for on the go quick code editing, as I am not always at my usual workstation. The 2013 MacBook Air seems to run everything fine, however, the screen resolution is very low, so it is sometimes hard to test on. If I am going away from my usual workstation for a long time, I use the MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15 inch. Super Fast. Super Easy. Usually I use a Mac Pro, but as this weighs 60lbs, it is impossible to take with me, but is a great server. If you travel a lot, I recommend the MacBook Pro with Retina Display 13 inch. Mine is fast, and because it has a high resolution screen, photoshop works perfectly. Jake

Here the tests and comparison Mac Book Air and Mac Book Pro http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks It is just tests not real application usage but it can give you bird view off Mac products productivity. I am waiting for Mac Pro 2 - it could be a bomb :) but we need to wait

@vldmax: It looks very cool. It is like 1/8th the size of the current one. Jake
