Extremely frustrated with Android Virtual Device Manager

I cannot get any virtual devices to work on Eclipse since I upgraded to BT v3 (though it could be just a coincidence). I have tried everything under the sun! I even went so far as to install the Genymotion Virtual Device Manager, and I am having similar issues with it as well. The device will launch, but there is a problem loading the project. In Genymotion I was able to choose the virtual device through the device manager and it did the same thing as the android virtual device manager, but The second time I tried to use the Genymotion device manager the window just froze when I tried to choose a device. I cannot use a real device to test, because I personally don't have or use any android devices--I am an apple user--so it is imperative that I have a virtual device manager I can use in Eclipse.

I bought a little Samsung Tablet to test my stuff on, and I steal my wife's android phone from time to time. But if you're stuck using the emulator, try creating a few different devices, and try each one. In my BTv3 test environment, I built a 'Google Nexus' phone from the emulator, and it seems to work out as good as can be expected from the emulator. Start off by opening your Android Virtual Device Manager. Select the tab 'device definitions' and choose something you think would closest match your 'target' market device. Once you have a little more experience under your belt, you can also custom create a device to fit your needs, but for the moment, choose something generic. Make sure the API for your 'test virtual device' will accommodate your project API level too. This guy covers the basics, which should get you going, but always stop back by the forums if you're still having a problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijiNFDyUFz8 Cheers! -- Smug

Genymotion works like a charm for me - so fast, so fluid, it's probably even better than running it on a device itself in terms of performance! Did you follow each step to the tee? https://cloud.genymotion.com/page/doc/ Good luck! -Nicholas

I actually think I will like it once I can get it working. I sent a support ticket with some Genymotion and VirtualBox logs, so they may be able to target my problem. I did notice at the bottom of the Virtual Device window is showing that it is not authenticated to Genymotion Cloud. My account is activated, so I'm not sure why it is showing this. I am obviously missing something. I'm a graphic designer by trade, so programming and all this system stuff is new to me! I have quite a learning curve to work on! Maybe someday I will actually know what the heck I am doing! But I guess everyone has to start somewhere. I just need to get a virtual device going so I can test and finish my project (heaven knows I'll probably run into more issues before its done...aaaahhhh the life of a newbie!).

i had loads of probs with the eclipse sim as well, one minute i could get it working, then the next couldn't, i got some advice on here to change down to api 2.2 google and used an old android phone, and ive managed to get everything working on my app, i think its best to start off on much lower api, get used to how eclipse works, and learn as you go, i designed my ios apps first, and couldn't believe how difficult eclipse was compared to xcode, but i suppose if it was gonna be easy , everyone would be doing it lol keep at it, its great when it works :)gonna try that genymotion now, will that work with eclipse sean

Thanks funkymonkey! I will try to change the API down this weekend. I haven't had time to work on it for the last week. This simulator issue is driving me crazy! I have unloaded and reloaded the SDK bundle meticulously 3 times, and I have followed the directions and the video tutorial to the "T", and I still can't get the project to load in the simulator ( the simulator itself does open) not even the Genymotion. I don't know if it's a memory issue or what. The simulator worked fine until I upgraded my SDK Bundle and added the Googleplay. I'm at a total loss!)-: . I am obviously overlooking something...

If you're still having trouble, check out GoNorthWest's YouTube Videos. He's created one for just about every configuration possible; Mac, Win7, Win8, etcetera... While I tend to abbreviate things; Mark takes his time and explains pretty much everything to you. Cheers! -- Smug
