New App idea..

Been trying to think of a new app idea and possible came up with one but not sure how to do it or if it is possible. What I was thinking is to create an app that allows users to update a current location of something with comments, and allow other users to comment on it as well. I know that is a poor description and hope this example helps. Let say to list phonebooth locations in the US and comment on them. ( Yes, I know it will be a short list since there aren't many left ;-))Is there a way that someone can be at a phonebooth take a picture of it, comment on it and update a ongoing list. Then if other people visit that booth, they can comment on that as well. Eventually would like to have it searchable by state, city, possibly zipcode and such. Any thoughts on how or if this is possible? Thanks, Howard

I like the simple description of your idea...It could actually be adapted for many different subjects and offer a good basis for many apps.. Good luck , I will be watching for your progress..Cheers! Chris

Hi Howard, I think that would be pretty easy using a database and some sort of form to input the information. I think it might go something like this: * User opens their app to see if there are any phone boots in the area * If there are, they can navigate to it, and post comments if they wish, for a particular booth, by clicking on the map market, which would bring up an HTML page created from information about the booth in the database * If there aren't, and say they're standing in front of one, they could fill in a form that has the GPS coordinates of the booth, some comments, and perhaps a photo. They would then submit the form and the information into the database Sorta sound like what you're after? Mark

Thanks for the replies, Mark, that is exactly what I want to do, my question is how to do I create a database for users to be able to add to? Red Dog, I was not able to see the video, sorry. Howard

Hi Howard. Vidcinity let's users upload a short video from their location. Then when others are within a mile of that location in the future, they are notified that a video exists and they can watch it. I don't think the app is available in the US store anymore.

Hi Howard, Creating the database isn't all that hard...assuming you're going to use an online database somewhere. Basically, you'll need to get a web service provider that also offers mySQL databases (or something similar). I use ProHosters, and am very satisfied with them. But, if you're just using the database, and not the web page part, I think places like HostGator can set you up for free. After that, it's a matter of designing the database table that you'll be using, and a form to submit the information with. You'll likely want to use PHP for that, which is server side scripting, so your host should also support PHP. I "think" it can be done client side with Javascript, but I'd have to research it. Retrieval of the information would also likely be done using PHP and standard SQL queries. Easier than it sounds, but still a bit challenging. I'm more than willing to help out if you'd like...just let me know! It would be more showing you where to get info to learn how to do it, as opposed to doing it for you, because I'm pretty swamped at the moment. But I'm fully confident that you're capable of learning all this stuff! Mark

Hi Mark, I would greatly appreciate your help and the instructional articles. I have not really worked with PHP, SQL, etc. I always wanted to learn though but it seemed to difficult. Hopefully these days it is a little easier. Thanks again, Howard
