Alternative to Android Emulator!

Meet Genymotion (http://www.genymotion.com/)! I just made the switch after working on my first Android app and growing impatient over the awful abysmal Android emulator. Genymotion is a much, much better emulator for Android development. At least 100x faster and more responsive with plenty more features. Additionally, it plays nice with Eclipse. You could easily link the two together for your app development needs and all logs will be recorded within Eclipse. I'm never going back. I hope this proves to be helpful to the Android lot of you! -Nicholas

I'll check it out! Thanks for the link. Goodness knows we could all use a better emulator, lol! Cheers! -- Smug

I'm just getting started with buzztouch/Eclipse, so forgive my errors in advance b/c I'm sure I'm making them left and right. * * * I've also installed Genymotion. It's a great emulator, but currently is limited to only API 16, 17, and 18(w/o GoogleApps). I asked them about getting access to an Android 4.0/API 14 version and the response was: "Yes, in a future release, 2.3 and 4.3 will be available but not 4.0, sorry." They didn't say "when." * * * Does anyone have any ideas for non-Eclipse emulators for APIs below 16? I have an older Smartphone running Android 2.3.5. My wimpy PC (AMD Athlon processor) barely runs the standard Eclipse emulators. I need to find a work-around for the mid-range APIs. * * * Just FYI Notes: I first installed Eclipse and Genymotion. The Genymotion emulators ran great...independently of Eclipse. I then used Eclipse's "Help > Install New Software > Add >" to access and install Genymotion's "ECLIPSE PLUGIN". But the virtual device manager just froze on my screen when I launched it from Eclipse. While trying to diagnose the problem, I realized that I would need more hard drive space for Genymotion (min2GB - 8+GB per emulator). So I uninstalled/re-installed Eclipse on a different partition. Then I re-installed Genymotion. While testing the new install, I found that Genymotion runs fine WITHOUT the plugin!!! I double checked this in my new installation: Menu >> Help >> Install New Software >>"What is ALREADY INSTALLED?(Last is a link & text on lower part of pop-up.) There is NO Genymotion plugin installed; I don't see any leftovers from the previous installation. The UN-install did leave Oracle's VirtualBox intact but I couldn't tell you if that has any effect on how the current configuration is working. I made sure Genymotion is pointing to the correct/new ADB path and I start the emulator before I launch the app. The devices run like magic and apps install with no problem! :D My newbie advice: Try Genymotion w/o the Eclipse plugin first, to see if it works for you.

Glad to be of assistance, Dave! I'm more than happy to have helped, especially knowing first-hand the challenges with Android emulation (and porting iOS apps as well). Good luck! :) Nicholas
