screen_menubuttons and menu_button_items - customization

Most of my button screens I want to use the default screen buttons menu and java source code I want to create a different version of the layout where I have a row of buttons on top of the screen then lets say I want an edit box where the user can type in data with a keyboard. Do I just add a new layout with the object/s I want added to the screen? Or do I have to create a new screen_menubutton.xml? If so how do I get it to call a different version of menu_button_items?
