Two Android How To's by SmugWimp Tutorials Posted

I just posted two very detailed and thorough must have tutorials in our How To's page. Both are by Smug Wimp. You will need both of these in order to use Maps in Android. One of the two explains how to set up Google Play Services in your project. You need to do this if you want to use maps or push notifications. The other explains how to get your map key from Google. Thank you, Smug! These are so helpful.

And I *just* figured out offline maps using Android 3.0 Fragments. Very excited about this. Hope to have something to show for it in the next week or so... Cheers! -- Smug

Smug - are you using Eclipse or Android Studio? I'm having a heck of a time getting it to work with Android Studio.

I'm still using eclipse. I tried Android Studio, and eventually I'll just stick to it. But in the meantime I kind of felt like I was spinning wheels, so I went back to Eclipse because it was familiar... Cheers! -- Smug

when you get to that point, let me know! I guess for apps that use maps, I'll just have to suck it up and go back to Eclipse.

I've looked into the How To page but could not find Smug's maps guide for Android, only for iOS. What is its exact name, please?

Oops! It isn't there. There should be two documents. I will upload the maps one again. The newest documents are always as the top.

Great simple tutorial, thanks Smug. Question: It says 'One API key per app'. Can we sign multiple apps with the same key and thereby use a single maps key, like we could do with version 1? I think we should be able to since the key is tied to the fingerprint, not necessarily some part of, or descriptor of the app itself, right? Tim

Tim, I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. It looks like you're using the SHA1 fingerprint of your app as well as your bundleId to create your API key. If your bundle is called 'com.wolftim.appA' then it should end up with a different API Key than something named 'com.wolftim.appB'. On page 8 of the tutorial, you'll enter your SHA1 fingerprint like "80d7e54896e7a17b96e2e68738e3201a2c907446:com.smug.someappname" which creates the API key... "If" Google is not using the bundle ID as a part of the API Creation process, it might work, but I haven't tried it. Cheers! -- Smug
