App Suddenly Dropping in Downloads and Ranks

Hi, I've had an app that for the past year usually averages around 30-50 downloads per day and is somewhere within the top 500 free sports apps. About two weeks ago, it suddenly dropped where I'm now getting 10-15 downloads and have been outside the top 1500 free sports apps consistently. A few days after this sudden drop began, I released a brand new update with tons of new features and changes- still the downloads are incredibly lower than previously. I looked at my analytics on Flurry and while my new update does not support iOS 5, less than 5% of my users use iOS 5 so that can't be causing such a significant drop. In addition, this new update is now available in an additional 12 countries. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing such a drop? Here's a link to my app: http://bit.ly/1dy29vf Thanks, David

Perhaps the change in the Appstore's Algorithm? I read it about it last week: http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/23/apples-app-store-rankings-algorithm-changed-to-favor-ratings-and-possibly-engagement/ Holiday and back to school could probably be associated with the slowness as well.

The ratings are very good though. It previously had an average 4.5 star rating and the new update has all 5 star ratings.

I did quick research on the App. Nothing popped out at me in the sense of a clone hijacking the name of the App. There was no Sports Central Free nor Sports Central + Check some of the other App aggregations services such as AppAnnie.com Downloading your app now and tuning it for The Ohio State University football news! :-) -- Niraj

Hi Niraj, I looked on App Annie to see the sports app rankings. Still seems like the other sports aggregation sites and around where they usually are. Just seems strange that my app would drop so much, so quickly with no bad ratings or anything. Thanks, David

Dag-nabbit, I can't see football related news for The Ohio State University! :-( Although, I understand it is difficult to keep up with a bajillion schools. How about for the Top 20 college football teams? Perhaps that is an easier one to manage. Put some stock photos into the app to give it pizazz. That's another way to get the ratings back to normal. -- Niraj
