Self Hosted v2.1.9, New Android Core - The Plan!

Lots of you have been waiting for this for a long time and were stoked to begin rolling out some significant changes...This is the plan... 1) We're beginning to update all the plugins in the market today, all of them in the market need updated to accomodate the new fragment approach for Android. iOS related code in plugin packages is unchanged. "Old" Android code in plugin packages is unchanged. The changes are Android only and only used when you use the latest Android Core while downloading projects (keep reading)... EDIT. #1 is done. All plugins have been updated in market and are ready to test away :-) 2) When the new plugins are updated we'll release the new Self Hosted download package to Buzztouch Members. This will be 2.1.9. EDIT. #2 is done. The 2.1.9 downoad is in Buzztouch Member control panels. Grab it, update your box, smile at the goodies. 3) Folks will install, use, and surely find issues. The first step after installing the latest Self Hosted package will be to update all the plugins that need updating. A new feature in the package makes this much easier. 4) We'll work through the kinks and get some fires put out (whatever they are as they are reported). We expect lots of folks to download some app projects (using the new self hosted panel and the new Android Core) for exploration reasons. 5) We'll get lots of feedback during this process and we'll work through the details. After a number of Buzztouch Members have updated their self hosted panels, and have done a few downloads, and we put out the fires...we'll add the latest Andorid Core download to buzztouch.com control panels so non-self-hosters can experience the goodness. EDIT: #5, buzztouch.com hosted control panels have not seen the v3.0 Core for Android yet. We're still working through some issues... d. #### EDIT To clarify, buztouch.com control panels will NOT be different until we update the plugins in those control panels. We are updating the version number and the downloaded package for self hosters...this means you won't see anything different unless you self host. But, it's a "flip of a switch" to update these in bt control panels as soon as it makes sense to. This won't be long...I'm thinking the weekend will tell us all we need to know :-) ####

Looking forward to it!. Quick question David - does 2.1.9 support those of us with a host that doesn't like the std 'out of the box' CURL, or will we need some support to get the (previous post upgrade? http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=9AC475EDDAE87A8DB2659F7 ) Thanks, Alan

@Adam: Custom Themes. Yes, when you do the update your /files directory will not change. This is where your theme should be. You WILL need to make sure the config.php file in the /root has your theme, just like it does now. Wait, if you want....DON'T replace the config.php file, it hasn't changed. But, you will need to update the version from 2.1.8 to 2.1.9 (in this config file). @AlanMac: I remember updating your server (a few times) when this happend. The cURL gotcha. The 2.1.9 package uses the exact same "fix" as I implemented on your machine so you, and a few other folks, will not have to go through the fix again. @Jake Chasan: Not necessarily. The next release, after this one (whenever that is) will be 2.2.0. It's been.. 2.1.5, 2.1.6, 2.1.7, 2.1.8, 2.1.9, you get it....2.2.0 will follow. It's likely that we'll make a few tweaks and fixes and KEEP the 2.1.9 package. It's usually not a good for us to release this one, then another one in just a few days. Because we're all so used to how the package is put together it's oftentimes easier to just fix one or two files, and let everyone know, rather than do a whole new release. It's a balance. There are some neat things in our future for self hosted and bt control panels but this release NEEDED to get out to move the ball forward in the Android world. Hey, whadya' know...we're doing Android goodies BEFORE iOS goodies, that's a first...eh? And, in fact, for the first time Self hosters (Buzztouch Members) are getting some new stuff BEFORE bt.com hosted panels. Another first. ...get self hosted updated with this release. (2.2.0 likely when iOS 7 is released) ...get boatloads of plugins updated to support new control panel and new Android Core (3.0). ...get kinks ironed out. THEN we can move towards making the Plugin Market self server so devs can add to it again without relying on us. And, of course, moving on towards iOS 7. When iOS 7 comes out it'll be "BT Core 3.0 for iOS" and "BT Core 3.0 for Android" and things will make much more sense for all of us. You and us...it's been nuts! I'm mostly stoked about getting the Plugin Market "self served" so we can get the ball rolling in the right direction for devs. Lots of them are waiting for this and we've been focussed on Android for longer than expected. All will be well and CHANGE IS GOOD!!!!!! d.

Thanks so much David. I thought what you said was super cool, (that this is the first time self hosted community gets features first). Super stoked to see the updates to the market, and even android. Take care of yourself and try to sleep, we're willing to wait a few more days rather than have you do all of this and overwork! (this HAS to be a ton of work, holy moly). Thanks again for the updates. Excited!! David

2.1.8 supports iOS6 and Android 2.2. 2.1.9 will support iOS6 and Android 3.0. Unclear about iOS 7 yet, but a good chance it will be 2.2.0.

Awesome, thanks BT Gang! Excited for the changes and to see that new CP. I'm gonna wait until next week to update - I just finished up some projects that took forever and lost major time fixing a server yesterday. I don't plan to be sober much this weekend or staring at any code- Tomorrow is the best day of the year!

"HTML files for plugins" won't be part of the self hosted package. This concept is related to what comes in a with a plugin pacakage. Today this is a .php file. This will change to an HTML file :-)

I have been doing a lot of testing of the core code. It works wonderfully. I know there will be bugs to be fixed, especially as you all make apps with all of the plugins. However, this will be a much improved experience for Android. For example, the new code even seems to handle a lot more images well, and the list scrolling is dramatically improved. If you have decided to add fewer images to your Android project to improve the performance, you may be able to add them back.

Just got my new (used) Nexus 7 this morning. (Took over a month to get a 4.0 device thanks to deals gone bad on ebay). I have to say - I'm lovin the new Android project. It's responsive, stable and quick. Love the animations too, such as on a refresh. Way to go David!

Just updated and really like to see the "prepare project download" part! Only thing is, that it still says, that it is version 2.18 and even if I press "check for update" it obviously tells me to update to 2.19. Well, probably a small fix? Leon EDIT: Ok will answer my own question ;-) As I reused my old config I obviously had to at least change the version number to 2.1.9 in "APP_CURRENT_VERSION"

Got it. You're right...the config.php didn't change but the version did. LOL. Glad you go it. ALSO: I just found and fixed a small gotcha...the BT-server/bt_v15/bt_app/bt_appPackage.php file changed. The new version is included in the download now. You can replace it or leave it alone, it's not hurting anything but it shows a javascript alert when the package has completed. This is a debug-testing statement and should'nt be. LOL. It's annoying! bt_appPackage.php is the file / page you're on when you prepare the project download. This is the file that's changed...all we did was remove the alert() call in the javascript. You can replace the file, or, you can simply remove the line where it's doing this. It's about line 405 in bt_appPackage.php, it reads alert(reponse)...just delete it and re-upload :-)

I just updated to 2.1.9 - Everything looking good. The new mass update feature is excellent. Updates: A word of advise when updating any BT Server. If you have changed the database prefix title upon your initial server install, make sure when you upgrade, you keep the same case-sensitive database prefix, or your server will not be able to read the database correctly. Just in passing, I've installed everything, and it looks good. However I do have issues with 'some' projects, if I try to package for Android download. I get this error: Errors occurred processing your request... 1) The packaging API had trouble downloading this app's icon from the control panel. but since it only happens on 'some' projects, I'm thinking it's associated with my projects that have custom plugins that I haven't created Android 3 files for (yet). Not complaining, just musing. I'll create new Android packages for the plugins and see what happens. I'll let you folks know. Cheers! -- Smug

The way I understand it, Jake, is that all plugins that are currently in the BT Plugin Market have been updated by David to accommodate the new Android Fragment methods, and shouldn't need an update. Those 'not' in the BT Market (self created, BTMods, etcetera) will need to be updated by their respective authors. This only applies to the Android side, and only if they want to be compatible with Android 3.0 'Old' Android and iOS should not be affected. Cheers! -- Smug

They will not be updated unless others want to update them, at the moment the plugin market has replaced them with better versions, and we might discontinue plugin releases altogether. :-( I would recommend for those using them to slowly get off them and use the Menu with Image plugin and Menu with Image Advanced plugin. Cheers, David.

Try Chris's solution: So, what you'll need to do: 1) Try to download a plugin using the one-click install method (it won't work) 2) Grab the link to the page that causes the error (should be: http://www.domain.com/BT-server/apn/admin/pluginUpdate_AJAX.php) 3) Call you host and tell them to run a "mod security report" on your domain, looking specifically at that url and to then whitelist the domain. It worked for me. Did it work for you? Jake

Very odd. Although I 'upgraded' my plugins to accommodate the new fragment technology, I still get an error attempting to download an Android 3.0 project (from an pre-existing app). However, I duplicated the app using my Smug Screen Copy utility, and rebuilt the app with a slightly different name, using the exact same screens, and of course it downloads just fine. Still snooping around... Cheers! -- Smug

@JoeCool That happened to me also for a bit. I went through the reinstall process (www.yourbtsite.com/install/) and that cleared up my problem. Might help yours? Cheers! -- Smug

@Smug I went through the install process and it seemed to work. I guess I must have made a mistake when I hand entered the info in my config file. Thanks Joe Cool

Be sure to delete the install directory when finished! That can be dangerous to keep around..

An excellent app, as well as a great idea. I wonder why there isn't an official app made by Buzztouch.com in order to showcase what it can do!?

Update: We've put lots of fires out in the last few days and have a few more issues to work through with the latest Android package. Thanks a ton to the self-hosters that have found and reported and FIXED some gotchas. We'll be turning on the new Android download for buzztouch.com control panels after working through a few more issues. Push is major broken! LOL. Long story. Some other minor adjustments are underway too. Mabye some of you can join us in Virginia in a few weeks? It's gonna be fun!

>Push is major broken! Eagerly awaiting this. Google has recently forbidden sending of outside ads through push notifications, so we must strive to send our own push notifications if we are to monetize the free apps at Google Play.

Hey, trying the update. I updated all files, except config.php (manually changed the version to 2.1.9) and the files folder. All seems ok, except when selecting the "prepare package for download" I get this: An error ocurred in the fnDbGetResult() method in utilityFunctions.php (4) Any suggestions? Thanks. Miguel

Hi, I have had a very good look around the forum but unfortunately I cannot find the answer to my questions so my apologies if they are around somewhere. I run my own self hosted package v2.1.7 and I would like to update to the latest version which I believe is v2.1.9. I have had a look through the forum and the posts above on this thread but I am still wondering about these questions: Will my existing apps still run when I upgrade to v2.1.9 or will they each need attention? Is the update process the same as previously? Are there any points which I need to bear in mind before carrying out the upgrade? I'd be grateful to know. John

Hey John - sorry we missed your question. The update process is just as it's been in the past. I believe going forward there's a way to do it via the control panel itself, which will be nice. For to get there, you'll have to manually upgrade to 2.1.9. Your existing apps will continue to work just fine. If you download a new package, you'll have the option to download using the old package files or the new core. The one thing you need to keep in mind is if you have plugins installed on your self-hosted control panel that did not come from Buzztouch.com. (e.g., custom plugins, plugins from buzztouchmods.com, etc). Those will require some attention to make them work with the new Android Core (and the new iOS Core once it's released).

Hi Chris, That's great. Many thanks for the information. I will back everything up, get a good nights sleep, and attempt the upgrade tomorrow morning. Regarding the plug-ins from outside BT, are these likely to stop the app that they are installed in from working or is it more likely that the plug-in itself will just not work? Or is it just not possible to say? John

Apps that are already built using those plugins will be just fine. But any project you download using the new Android Core 3.0 (or the upcoming iOS Core 3.0) likely won't work. You'll know right away because your new app project won't compile.

Phew! Got there! Needed more than a little help from PSMDanny as I made a mistake along the way, but the installation itself was perfect. The only difficulty arose from the developer! Thanks for your words of encouragement, Chris1. John

Make sure your config.php has all of the fields populated with the correct values; not everything is placed during installation. Most values can be transferred from your old config.php file, if you have a backup somewhere. But don't 'use' it, just get the values from it. Cheers! -- Smug
