FAO all UK members

Hi, I have a question for all the UK members. I work full time, bringing home a full time salary and have been playing with BT for almost 2 years now. The first year was a learning curve. I created a few apps which were 100% free, no adverts, therefore making no income. Only recently have I started aiming for a small second income. With a few apps in the store now making ~£200 per month since April 2013. My question really is: do we have to register as a company? Have others done this? Is there a rule that you don't have to if you make under a certain value? I'd appreciate some feedback Thanks all Steve See my apps my searching 'randalldesigns' in the App Store.

Yes you need to register as a company. If you get caught its an instant grand fine for tax evasion.

Is it as simple as walking into the bank and asking to register? Does it effect your tax band on you other job?

If you go to direct.gov you can sign up there. They send you tax paperwork

As Kittsy says, it's best to be safe. especially with the current lot in power, tax is big on their agenda. Some info here on it: http://www.brighton-accountants.com/blog/tax-self-employment-still-employed/

You do need to declare any additial earnings to your normal salary to the taxman. But, I don't believe you need to register as a company if you are just concerned about paying tax, you can do that in your tax return from April 6th 2014.

If you're earning £200 a month in all honesty you do not need to register or even tell anyone. This is nothing compared to what some people are earning and not declaring. Now, if you declare your earnings to HMRC then you can just be a sole trader and they'll send you a National Insurance bill each quarter whether you make a profit or not. You submit a tax form each year before April and then they say how much tax you pay if anything. Remember to include as many costs as possible, that way you don't pay any tax. At £200 a month you won't need to pay anything. Of course, non of us on here are accountants and are qualified to give you advice ... thats the law! So, go to an accountant, a good one, who will work for you and save you money. Most accountants will not charge you upfront before they hear you, I'm in Bristol and have a brilliant accountant ...
