Really very minor victory

Hello all, newbie here, This post is of little purpose except to say that I've installed Eclipse with all the doo-daas necessary and have just successfully managed to run the Hello World test app and see it in an emulator. It's not like I did much of the figuring out - many thanks to Mark and David for the tutorials and BTU respectively. And because I am just a beginner I'm sure there'll be lots more to smile (and pull my hair out) about in the future, but right now this just gave me a big squiee-moment. All right, back to your regular Saturday now.

Congrats! Don't downplay the importance of your win - getting an app to compile and run is no small task, even if the code was done for you. Many have given up completely because that piece of the process was too hard. So congrats and keep it up!

Welcome to the BT. No achievement is tiny nor any victory minor. Just stick around with your passion and you will achieve what you really deserve. All the best.

Thank you all! I'm still grinning over here. In the meantime I've tried it with my own test app, and predictably enough there's Stuff That Won't Work. Have squirreled out that 88-page pdf on Android to see if there's anything in there that will help me figure it out. I have to say that this is giving me a whole new appreciation for people who do this full-time. Your brains must be wired somewhat differently to mine, but I'll be darned if I won't try and adapt my brain somewhat. I'm sure I'll be back with some questions at some point, but I've spent enough time on irc to understand the value of reading those fine manuals (sorry, my weird sense of humour making an appearance there) first. But before all that, another cup of tea perhaps.

Rock on! Like what others have said, each victory is super important, and helps you to the next level. You've already joined an elite club of people who can install Eclipse and compile a working app! You should be super, super proud of that! Most of the errors you're seeing are likely very easily taken care of. The biggest thing is making sure you're using the correct API level, which is Google 8 at the moment (but Google 11 also solves some problems). Double-check that, and then post back if you still have problems! Mark

Hi Mark, Oh, last night I went out on my own. I watched your tutorial on the whole maps issue, and the keytool plugin, went over to google and ran into the wall of the api version thing. Found some comments you'd made here on the forums about how patience will be needed until BT updated, thought to myself, 'aint no-one got time for that' and promptly did what I thought I had to in order to get a debug key, be it v1, 2 or 67. Of course it didn't work. And secretly I probably knew it wouldn't work. But at least I tried! :D

Ha! I'll give you points for trying, but I'll have to deduct a few for not following directions! Unless you have a previous API v1 key, you're simply out of luck until BT releases the new code. But just a few days ago I gave the code a test, and the maps work beautifully, so your patience will be well rewarded! In the meantime, just assume that maps work, and spend some time exploring the other plugins. Mark

I have a ton of respect for anybody developing on Android...I tried it for about a week before giving up on it completely ...for now at least
