New and in need ...

Hiya everyone, I have a new MacBook Pro i7 which I bought so I could go back into the world of developing apps after a spell of sickness. I've got eclipse and Xcode up and running fine but ... and here is where the learning curve is starting to get me out of breath. Nothing works. So, I'd like to know: What people usually set their emulators at with which version of Android and how much RAM to give it. Plus are the there features in the building of the app before publish which you would stay clear of so they work? (My maps test just doesn't want to show anything, the Lat and Long are working) You know, is there a safe setting which I can apply so I can at least start to play around with the basics. Any help and advice would be awesome!

I'd say follow along with a couple of Marks (GoNorthWest) YouTube Videos. He's got a Mac or two running around and created some video tutorials for that. http://www.youtube.com/gonorthwest Hope this helps! Cheers! -- Smug

Cheers buddy! Incidentally, do you know what could be wrong with my maps? They work in the browser but my emulator shows the pin and checks. The console reports errors. is there an issue with the emulator or my building of the app. To be honest, its looks so basic from the BT side I'm surprised it doesn't work.

Maps are a slightly different thing... Currently, David is in the process of upgrading the system and components for some recent changes. One of those changes is the deprecation of Google Map API v1 and the implementation of Google Map API v2. If you don't have an API Key, the maps won't work. However, since the maps work for API v1, and API v1 is deprecated and no longer being issued, what it means is, until the release of the new framework/shell/plugins, they're not going to work for you. Just imagine a beautiful map for now, and work on other areas. Shouldn't be much longer now... Cheers! -- Smug

I've seen the new maps, and they are indeed beautiful (and easier to configure!). Hang tight on that....they'll be available soon. But trust me, they work! Mark

LOL ... yeah ok. So, we're just waiting on the nice devs at BT to give us shiny new API keys, cool. Ok, thanks for your advice. I will apply visualisation techniques and carry on experimenting!

One more thing. If, aside from the maps, you have specific things that are stumping you, just post them in the forum, and you'll be amazed how quickly they get solved. As for Android testing, if you have an actual device you can test on, it's always preferable to the emulator (which is buggy). Same for iOS. Mark

Actually, you have to generate the API keys yourself, but it's super easy, and the instructions are already written (and online at Google, by the way!). David had to modify the base Android code to deal with the new "fragments" framework that Android is using. Mark
