New and in need of advice

I am a 17-year-old programmer, I guess. The thing is, I have never programmed anything at all. But I am interested, and while researching the process of creating apps I found Buzztouch. I must say, I very much like the concept. I have a huge chance of making a great app, but I really don't know how to. So now, in desperate need, I turn to the community. Here is my scenario: I have been offered to make a app for my school that works for both Android and iPhones, but most people in my school own iPhones so the focus is on the iOS. I don't know what to do but I have good ideas for the application and have spent a couple of nights not sleeping because I need to express my ideas. The following items I think must be in the application: - A students page (when opened two buttons appear, one is "Social club members" where there are certain people, and then "All students" where there must be a search option, there should be phone numbers of all the students and what class they are in aswell. - The cafeteria's menu (A list fx. "17th October - Fish and potatos" could be a button for 17th of October) - School calendar (A basic calendar where some days have descriptions) - List of discounts (List of a store name, the discount the user gets and a small picture for each store) - Future homework (for this service the user must log into a server the school owns, I have no idea how to make that happen) - Acess to their school e-mails (the user must also log into a server here, just like a @hotmail.com or @gmail.com server, again, no idea how to) - Recent school news (I guess this is a RSS feed? The news is taken from our school's website: www.verslo.is) - Facebook statuses from various accounts associated with the social side of the school (RSS aswell?) - A hashtag update from instagram, a feature to see all pictures posted onto instagram with the hashtag #nfvi, I have no clue how to though. - A advertisment banner on each page everywhere in the app (Is this possible? How much can I expect to make from this and where is it best to get adds?) I really want to get this done right, but I am stressing out because I don't know anything about programming, any help is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! Dearest reguards, Fannar Bollason

Also, Is all this available to me as a non-member? There are about 900 people who will actively be using the app if it works out well. When I have 900 people can I still make a feature where there is log-in requirements? Fannar

Welcome! Sounds like a neat idea for an app. A lot can be done with existing plugins. The first screen with two buttons: use the menu button plugin. All students: use the search plugin Cafeteria menu: use Menu Advanced with dates as titles and food as description. Can link to custom HTML page for more details Calendar: best bet currently is to do it in HTML and use custom URL plugin Discounts: either a menu plugin or HTML Instagram: HTML or rss I'm guessing News: RSS feed Facebook: custom URL or rss Email: If its all web-based email accounts like gmail, could use custom URL. But most smartphone users will already have email native on their device Homework: that's a tricky one. No current plugin will work well and it raises security issues. Also teachers would have to maintain the app, and buyin will be difficult. Of course, some of these could be better using custom plugins (some of us create them for a small fee), but you would need to be self-hosted. Advertising to 900 people won't bring you much money btw. Better off getting school or student council to pay you to make the app.

Thank you very much for this addition, Chris. I have been trying to design my main screen with a buttoned layout, the following link shows a image of my button details: http://gyazo.com/00afff9381523a299a61dbc54510200d Can anybody tell me how big or small my images have to be to fit the criteria in the link? I get this outcome when I put some I have saved: http://gyazo.com/65474087e65e343bd7761fb835fedc9d

By the way, is it not a possibility to have ads when I have buttoned menus?

And is there any way to say how much I would get if I would have 900 users use my app 3x a week? It seems this information is not on the internet at all

Hi, @chris1 is absolutely correct, you won't get much money, if any, from showing ads to just 900 users. The info isn't on the net as it's impossible to know. To get a (very) rough idea of earnings check out what sort of AVERAGE eCPM (estimated earnings for every 1,000 impressions received) ad networks are claiming. Most claim 3 to 5 US dollars eCPM, the reality for most small indie developers is closer to 50c - $1 eCPM. So if you're serving 2700 ad impressions a week, you might get $2 - $2.50 a week, if you're lucky. Your situation is really bad though, as you're not expanding your user base. The eCPM is likely to drop and keep dropping as you're serving ads to the same users all the time. I suppose you might get 100 or so new users once a year? But that won't raise eCPM in any way. Go with Chris' suggestion, payment for making the app.
