Weather Underground

Hello, Has anyone used the weather underground plug in? I'm using it for a new app in development and the API worked up until I got a notice that I had too many "call ups" in one day. I moved the weather page to the "back" of the app in place of having it as the "home screen". I thought this would help but for 3 days now, the weather page doesn't show any text info, just a radar and some weather icons. It used to have the geographical info displayed and temps...etc. I have selected the weather plug in to display the weather in the location of the user instead of entering in a set spot. I selected the "free" development version, I'm wondering if this only good for one app? If I had 500 downloads a day and hundreds of people calling up weather, the package wouldn't deliver, so what's the use of having the plug in? I do not want to pay $300 plus a month for a weather service. Any advice? Anyone know of any better weather plug in options?

Depending on if you are on buzztouch.com server or your own here is a solution: https://buzztouchmods.com/downloads.php?download_id=53 SmugWimp (https://www.buzztouch.com/smugwimp) has some great tools also for time savers too!!!! Self-Hosted especially ;) Sheri

Thanks for the plug, Sheri! :) I understand your pain, RogueWave. I got the same thing from worldweatheronline.com; great api, limited use. The very reason I wrote the script. And Sheri is right; my 'SmugAPI Saver' script is the tool you'll want. You don't necessarily need to be 'self hosted' but if you want to run my scripts you'll need access to a PHP server somewhere that can work with you. Cheers! -- Smug

Smug's API Saver looks like a great option. Surprised you hit the daily limit (500). I never hit the limit while developing and testing the plugin. The only limits I ever ran into was the 10 calls per minute limit. As with any API that has a subscription you have to do the cost/benefit. My opinion - If you're getting $500 downloads a day on a paid app, you're generating at minimum $350 a day. That would easily justify a $20/mo or even $200/mo expenditure if it was an integral part of the app.

Sorry meant 500 downloads a day not $500. ^^

Thank you, I'm going to defer to removing the plug in for now. I appreciate the info and I will certainly look at Smug's API Saver at some point.

@SmugWimp. Just looked at your script. Man, you are a crafty genius :-) LOL. How much have you tested the script? I'm trying to replace the Weather plugin with something else. I can't use your script as is, since the Weather plugin doesn't accept such a URL (it only accepts a Weather Underground API key, as far as I can see) - unless I'm missing something, in which case please enlighten me? :-) Cheers

Oh. I see what you're saying. The 'plugin' doesn't allow for a URL, only an API key. If that's the case, you'll need to modify the plugin code. find the section that calls for the WUnderground URL and replace it with the SmugAPI Saver URL. My (unreleased, and probably will stay that way until I get around to the Android side too, sorry) weather plugin does weather in an RSS list fashion similar to the TableView menus, and I just use a complete URL because I had the script in mind while designing the plugin. Or you might ask @MGoBlue if he could accommodate you, if you're unfamiliar with the code aspect. Cheers! -- Smug

@SmugWimp. That's exactly what I thought you were going to say :-) Great advice. Thanks!
