Is anyone still developing for iOS 5 ?

Just curious. With iOS 7 right around the corner, I was wondering if anyone here is still developing for iOS 5, and why? Thank you.

About two months ago I released an update to my app with a custom plugin using an xib file that I mistakenly set to a deployment target of 6.0 although the app itself was for 5.0. The only complaints I got were from people using first generation iPads since Apple won't let them update to 6.0 so they are ALL out of date. Unfortunately there are still quite a few people with first gen iPads and I was getting multiple emails daily until I fixed the issue. If I was going to create a new app I'd probably go to 6.0, but I feel like I need to keep existing apps at 5.0 for a little bit longer.

I usually target 5.1 if I can. We'll see what iOS 7 brings to the table.

Yep. I have a 1st Gen iPad that is my 'base' device. iOS 5.1+ Cheers! -- Smug

I always leave compatibility for 5.1 the best that I can. I'll abandon it when iOS 7 comes out, and compile for the lowest 6.0. Cheers, David https://buzztouchmods.com

Just wish I didn't have to lose jailbreak to upgrade my phone! Don't need that extra functionality all the time, but it's sure helpful when I do.

I used to be big in the jailbreak scene, before developing for apple. Loved it so much, super creative community. Problem was the same, kept losing my jailbreak, and the last time it happened I just never got around to re-do it. Thinking I will wait until iOS 7 is done and ready. I target iOS 4.3 as my lowest. I do this to get the highest amount of users possible. I used to go down to iOS 4.0, but it got too tricky to support armv6. I would say iOS is almost a requirement. Firstly, there are millions of iPad 1 owners out there (one of which being myself), but also some people refusedto transfer to iOS 6 after the maps scandal.

Also depends on what you're trying to do. When developing an app for a client's organization or business, compatibility is very important. But if trying to make money on an app, features and user experience are more important.

I wish my iPad 1 would stop working so I could justify a new one, but it's still flawless. Good point on the iOS maps issue too.

How many iPads are out now? 4? 5? I got confused after they started dropping the numbers with the "new ipad". Cheers, David https://buzztouchmods.com

Yeah - Apple does a good job at making your tech feel obsolete when it's really not ;)

Don't forget iPad Mini as well, iPad 2, mini and 4 are all current. 3 was dropped from production (but still available from apple via refurb store) I expect when iPad 5 comes out, iPad 2 will stop production? Although that said, it's a great machine and keeps a price competitive with 'droid tabs, so maybe they won't drop it?
