Plugins not downloading / Making sure everything works!

Hi all, Finally, I have made the move to Self-Hosted, and although I was all frightened about it, I'm really pleased that I've come through with pretty much everything working. I'm very pleased. But I do have a few issues, one of which is the plugins aren't downloading. I press the "Download Plugins from Buzztouch.com" button, which lists all the plugins I have, but when I press install, an error comes up with loads of issues. I'm not really sure what to do. I have made a plugin directory in my self-hosted: /files/plugins , although I'm not sure what is happening. What going on? Aside from this, I would also want to know what the /files directory should contain. It was blank, but I have put it /themes and /plugins and /temp . Is there anything else. I had to find out that I needed them, so I'm unsure if anything else is needed. Also, are there any other themes than this one on BuzztouchMods: https://www.buzztouchmods.com/downloads.php?cat_id=4&download_id=47 I do quite like this theme, although out of curiosity, I would like to see some others.

As a workaround, you might have to download your plugins (one by one, ugh!) and manually upload them into your BT Control panel (you can upload them one by one, but using F.T.P. is much faster). 'usually' it turns out to be an errant PHP setting; I'd start there. Your 'files' directory will end up being the 'heart' of your BT self hosted. It contains all the plugins, all of your applications, and the themes that you want to alter the appearance of. but it gets built 'after' the server is installed and things start happening. If the plugins directory isn't built yet, then upload the first plugin via the self hosted bt control panel and let the server do the work, then upload the rest with your f.t.p. app... Even when I upload a plugin .zip file, it says there's an error. This would suggest its a PHP thing, so my question now is, where would I start? This is what the error says: Error Saving Archive. The file archive uploaded OK but it could not be saved to the file system?

Then it sounds like permissions. If you have an FTP program see if you can use it to change your file permissions on the entire directory structure to 755. With respect to php troubleshooting, you'll need to know your PHP settings, which can (usually) be found using a quick script. create a webpage called 'phpinfo.php' and have the contents reflect this: <?php phpinfo(); ?> then use a browser to see what your variables are. BTW, my host (network solutions) has phpinfo turned off by default for safety/security reasons. yours may too; you may have to dig around your host's support pages for certain things to get accomplished. Or not. Cheers! -- Smug

Well I may have some good news. I changed the file permissions for every file in my self-hosted thing, and now when I press the "install" button, it says "loading..." and doesn't lead onto a huge error. But it stays on "loading...", so presumable, it must take time to download it to the self-hosted package.

I haven't actually found a solution yet. It still says loading, so something is wrong here.

I have 2 self hosted, one with GoDaddy and one with Host Gator. GoDaddy loads fine, Host Gator does not. Jake

If it's going to be a log, what would I do to have to do. I haven't tried Self-Hosted before, so I wouldn't know what to do, really.

I mean, there must be a log of events somewhere... that log may have information that could tell you what the issue is... You might also see if your PHP.ini file (the file that sets the behavior of your php environ) has 'display_errors = on'... If it's off, turn it on; it will show you much more error information (you don't want this 'on' for a normal production environment). Cheers! -- Smug

Well I've looked all around for any of the errors that may have caused this. Can't track it down. It's not the end of the world, because instead I just downloaded the Self-Hosted versions of all my plugins, and I am currently uploading them via my ftp-program. It has already worked for a few of my plugins, so bingo. A small inconvenience, but nothing more. i'm looking forward to seeing the benefits of self hosted!

Dont forget to nab a copy of the Screen Copy utility over at BTMods... I'm a little biased, but I find it useful. Cheers! -- Smug

Just musing... When things don't work with no errors, it 'can sometimes' mean that things within your config are fine, but there are outside entities that still keep things from working. This could be port communications. It stops a lot of push configuration, it may very well have also stopped your server communicating with BT... Ask your hosting company if they can monitor your activity and see where the breakdown occurs... Nothing immediate, but you will want this fixed eventually. Cheers! -- Smug
