XCode with an SSD

Hi guys was a bit quiet, yesterday. I don't know about you lot but I have multiple Xcode projects that have simulators and 2 devices attached. As well as Google chrome with 20 tabs, FTP software, Text Wrangler, Photoshop, quick time, screen capture software the list goes on. I decide to make the move from a HDD to an SSD and all of my beachball and slowness issues have sorted themselves out. You don't need no fancy software to clone the drive just used "disk utilities" It took 4 hours to clone and install. I am a very happy bunny. I can't recommend this high enough I am a SSD convert. That is all

I really can't believe it XCode whizzes through, photoshop loads instantly instead of nearly 2 minutes. I'm a bit gutted have never done it earlier. So easy to upgrade the older macbook pro's

It's the clone that amazes me the most, it's exactly where you left off. When I cloned I must have forgot to close safari, when it booted the first time safari showed with all my tabs open, AND a half completed Buzztouch forum reply LOL.

I'm just starting out on my new MacBook Pro with a 1TB 'Hybrid' drive. It seems a little faster than my smaller quantity 7200 rpm drive, but not 'astonishingly' so. But the space is nice. Nothing scientific; just my general impression. I think I'll be more impressed when I put some more RAM in here; 4GB isn't enough anymore. Cheers! -- Smug

Pretty much the same as any drive, for the most part. Obtain new drive. Clone existing drive to new drive Swap out old drive with new drive Reboot. The hardest thing is usually finding the right tools. a #1 phillips is pretty small. You sometimes get one with a drive kit. I ended up buying a little set with various tips and mini-torx and stuff, but that was for my GPS stuff, but it works just as well on Macs, Androids, and iPhones. Cheers! -- Smug

Congrats. Wait until you try Eclipse on there now..... I've also used Carbon Copy Cloner or good old Clonezilla in Parted Magic to copy/back-up mac drives. SSD main reason I went with an AirBook over a slightly more powerful MBP. I know I can't upgrade this thing but it boots/shuts down in 7 seconds and it's awesome for commuting. I've probably owned/killed 20+ laptops over the years but not a single one works as well as this AirBook has so far. Can't wait until they make a Retina version of the Air!

Try to backup and wipe and restore the drive. That will give you a fresh start (fragmentation-wise). Also, increase your RAM. It is fairly cheap. Also, disable-delete Flash. Only run Chrome when you need Flash. Then quit Chrome immediately after. Chrome has its own built-in Flash, which gets shut-down upon quitting. Safari uses the system's Flash, which won't get killed upon a quit of Safari. A day without Flash means more stability, less security vulnerabilities, less fan noise and better battery life. You could also upgrade the hard-drive to a 7200 RPM version and also possibly get more GBs. Just be aware that battery-life will be less and fan noise might be more. Try those cheap methods before splurging on an SSD upgrade. Only then can you truly justify the tech bonus! :-) -- Niraj
