Is making your app iPad compatible worth the effort?

Currently I set my xcode project to iPhone only rather than universal (iPad/iPhone). I do this because I'm simply lazy in regards to designing the iPad version. LOL! In terms of marketing, advertising, downloads, and popularity - am I missing out on revenue and downloads by ignoring the iPad side? I'm sure I am, but would it be a significant loss in the market? Anyone have any experience with this? Cheers, David https://buzztouchmods.com

Great question! I'm trying to make my app universal right now. I think there are pros depending on content being shown, e.g. Web content is nicer to view on the iPad. My concerns are regarding images for headers, icons, etc. when it comes to making an app iPad compatible. For example, I'm using the Menu with Image plugin, which accepts one size for header image, but when you rotate the app to landscape on an iPad the image is not large enough to span across the screen. I also don't see anything specific in the control panel mentioning iPad image sizes. Great topic to discuss further :-)

Yes! It is worth that effort. Trust me on this one. I gained a third more downloads when I went to iPad. It seems like a challenge, but I love app development!

Its worth every bit of effort it takes, in my opinion. If you're developing for a client, then they would normally want the app to be universal (and would of course be billed accordingly). If you're developing an app to market yourself, remember that the "Top Charts" are segregated to iPhone and iPad. I've seen a few of my apps that might be lost in the depths of the iPhone rankings, but rank much higher in the iPad rankings. And that helps sales and discovery a LOT. Hope that helps. -Chris

I definitely advocate iPad design. It does mean larger app sizes and perhaps larger-than-needed images. If menu with image needs modifying, send me a pm so I can add it to my next update of the Menu Image Advanced plugin. Gotta finish the new plugin I'm working on currently before I can do that though! ;). Almost done with iOS version though, and just started it today.

@Chris - a good update for Menu with Image Advanced would be to change the header image for large and small devices.

DO design for iPad. the Pad (and tablet) market is growing fast, and more importantly, as Stobe pointed out Apple divides the store rankings etc. from iphone and ipad, and there are far fewer ipad compatible apps. From a marketing standpoint, it is a very good idea. And I have had people get a rejected iphone app get accepted after a few changes and making it compatible for both. iPad design is a pain at times, but yes, worth it. It would be useful if more of the plugins worked well in both, though most work ok in iPad. Joe

Incredible feedback, I had NO idea how much of a difference it makes. I'm going to open xcode right now and get to work! Cheers, thanks everyone! David https://buzztouchmods.com

Of course you can use the small images (the ones with small in the name in the control panel or configuration file) for iphone and the background large images and the type for ipad. That's how it was designed.

I think just seeing your app on the ipad is rewarding enough to go the extra mile. Apple reviewers are less pushy when it comes to ipad and it'll have a very good effect on them if they see at least a screen or two with nice graphics and ipad specific design. That was my key to approval after a few rejections.

@WebNevees. Great suggestion about images. I think it would be nice to make it more clear in the control panel for each plugin. And this is where some agreed upon standards for plugin development, and standard features to expose to developers via the control panel, would really help, e.g. see my recent forum post on background audio. Cheers.

@annandale & @chris I haven't used yet your new plugin chris, but I understand it works like menu with image plugin with the header image. I can't see the reason why you should make an option for small and large devices, because as it is now with the 1536*720 dimensions it is automatically resized for every device. I use menu with image plugin in my forthcoming up and this option of using only one image for my project really helps. Firstly it saves me some time of creating two images for each menu and secondly it saves me space from my app's size

Flurry has a good paper on the subject, "smartphone vs tablet" usage differences. http://blog.flurry.com/bid/90987/The-Truth-About-Cats-and-Dogs-Smartphone-vs-Tablet-Usage-Differences They present some fascinating statistics on the topic, so depending on your app, and it's market, this could be insightful for many of you.

@Georgios. Using the 1536*720 size doesn't expand across the screen in LANDSCAPE mode on an iPad..at least not for me :-) Cheers

@ronbo I like the flurry stats. I've been spending this month converting all to ipad... some effort, some easier than I thought. Thanks for the info. David https://buzztouchmods.com
