I should know the difference between self-hosted and BT by now, but...

Like I said, I should know the difference between self-hosted, member, guest, etc. But I'm never quite sure how to explain it to someone. For example, I have a self-hosted account with dashboard, plug-ins and my apps. I'm a buzztouch member so I can also have 50 apps hosted for free on buzztouch - but I (or anyone) can't use plugins on the buzztouch hosted apps? If my nephew wanted to sign-up as a member but not have a self-hosted site - what would he have to work with? thanks.

Hello! By signing up to be a member, you get access to self-hosted software, which allows you to essentially set up your own buzztouch.com, and provide accounts to other people (like your nephew), just yourself, clients, etc. You get 100 API calls (100 source downloads) per month. You have to maintain the site yourself, and can install any plugins you buy from the plugin market. Ultimately, you run the self-hosted server, and you're responsible for it all. Your nephew can join BT.com as a Guest, explore, build some apps, and other stuff. He won't be able to download the server software until he becomes a paying member. You could also provide him with a guest account on your self-hosted server if you have one. But h wouldn't have a BT username for forums, etc. If your nephew signs up as a member, he'll have everything you have, including the ability to set up his own server if he chooses. He doesn't have to. But, in all other aspects, he'll have what you have! I'd highly encourage you to encourage him to become a member! Mark

Yup Mark has it on the spot. Just a quick question Shenry, did you say that you CANNOT use plugins that are on apps hosted by buzztouch? Any plugin that's been released here should work for your self hosted server. Just email me as usual and I can have your server updated. I updated your server to 2.1.8 so you should actually be able to sync plugins now without me on buzztouchmods. Sorry if I totally confused your statement! Cheers, David https://buzztouchmods.com

Sorry, I don't think I was making myself clear. I know I can use plugins hosted by buzztouch on self hosted. I didn't know if someone who was a BT member could use BT plugins in apps if they were not self hosted. I though I remember early on, v14, apps using rss and other plugins could be created and hosted within Buzztouch, then it changed to be that you had to self-host (or Drop Box) to use v2 and BT-hosted plugins.

You could, in theory, take a plugin that you've bought, and incorporate it into a non-buzztouch app. You'd have to do some extra coding because of the integration with the core files that come in your buzztouch project. But, it could be done. You do not have to be self-hosted to use the plugins you find in the Plugin Market. As a member, you purchase the plugin, and it automatically gets installed to your control panel. Nothing else has to be done. However...unless you are using self-hosted, you can't use any other third party plugins, like those provided by Mr. David. Self-hosted is the only way to do that. For either one, self-hosted or buzztouch.com, you can provide CONTENT for your app from anywhere you like, such as DropBox. That content could be JSON that describes a screen, or images, documents, media...things like that. Those aren't considered plugins, as the core code files still need to be part of your actual Xcode or Eclipse project. Does that answer your question? Mark
