Newbie without a Mac but excited to learn...

Hey all, I'm really excited to be part of the buzztouch community. I'm entering this arena with not much experience however from the training videos I'm seeing that I should be up and running in a short time. My biggest question is, Has anyone tried running the Apple OS X Lion as a virtual machine on a windows 7 machine? Seems like this would be possible to do, rather than go out and buy a apple/mac machine... my bank account can't handle that right now. Thanks for any insight here... I look forward to talking with you and learning together!

Welcome to Buzztouch! In the meantime, you can do all kinds of Android stuff, while figuring out your mac situation. Genuinely, it's not something I would recommend. That said, I understand budgets as well. I don't know anyone who runs a Mac on their PC. I'd scrimp a little and find a reasonably priced Mac of some nature (an old MacBook Pro Laptop, or maybe a Mac Mini) but be sure that the one you buy is recent enough to run OSX 10.8.x, otherwise you'll end up having to eventually buy *another* mac. Cheers! -- Smug

Thanks Smug! Words of the wise, I'll work with the Android, looks like Apple is pretty stingy with it's app approvals anyway... wish they were a little more open regarding that. Cheers! back atcha.

Hi @RetroPatriot, Welcome to buzztouch! Looks like your finding your way around the forums and tutorials great! I do not have a Mac yet and I try to do my best with Android. We all have to start somewhere so why not start and understand the process with Android. LA

Hi, Apple is what you need to take iOS. Thinking Mac can run on Windows is a fantasy, I'm afraid. If you're looking in a Mac, look around ebay and places. A 5-year-old mac is still way better than a brand-new PC. Fiddle around with Android, and see what you can do. On the iOS note: Don't worry about app approvals, Apple accept 93% of apps, and the other 7% is because the app isn't quite right, but you'll get a sense for that when you design apps. We only hear horror stories because if you got approved, it wouldn't be a story worth selling to the press. 750,00 apps are out there, so yours can be too! If you'll be taking app development seriously, and making a career out of it, which some people on Buzztouch do, you'll need to start looking at a Mac. But in the mean time, you can have fun with Android! You'll be good to go in no time! I look forward to seeing you out and about a bit more.

Hi Patriot I went down that road too myself. I started Buzztouch on my Dell laptop. Tried to get mac os x running on it, but it took so long to finally get what I wanted that I had went into finding a macbook pro. So I got one with a loan and it's definitely worth it. I trashed the whole mac on a pc idea. You'll make the money from the change quickly hopefully, don't worry. The whole process was a great opportunity though since I practically fed myself buzztouch on the android system. Got my app exactly where I wanted it, then battled apple for 3 months to get it approved on iOS. The whole time my Android app was ready but waiting for it's iOS sibling! So the moment I got that approved (on the fourth submission!) I geared eclipse into full blast on my macbook pro instead of the ole Dell (which was a good move too), finalized and submitted android in two days. I just saw the droid version in Google Play a few minutes ago. I am happy :). Yes Apple is pretty picky, but only until you understand what they are looking for in an app. Of course two of my rejections were based on licensing and such issues. But I learned how to become a better iOS and mobile developer because of their pickiness. I practically developed a new plugin to keep them satisfied. You have to have an Macbook to feel the apple environment. It's better this way. @Annandale is on target completely. But if you don't find it in your budget, stick to Android as it has lots of opportunity if you work for hire and not as a developer to create and distribute your own apps. When you get the feel for buzztouch and if it works out for you, you'll be able to make the money you need most probably.

Annandale, Neeves, AL, thanks very much for your welcomes and insights! You've taken some of the discouragement away and I thank you! I'll continue to push through all the training etc, do some practice and move forward. can't wait for the day to have a mac, I know they're sweet machines... Take care and happy apping!

Hi RetroPatriot, I do both platforms, started about end of December 2012... My advice is not to mess with OSX on a PC. There are people who were able to run it on a PC, but I would like to see their results when it comes down to Xcode. Using a Mac Mini Mid 2011 from eBay may answer your question... Annandale Apps is very right that a few years old Mac is always better and more fun to work with rather than a PC. Sure you can do Android on a PC in the meantime. In the end, there can be done nice things. My experience is though, that I had strange little problems when developing Android on a PC, that never arised when using Mac. Things were working one time and not working again, then started to work after a few restarts of Windows... Have fun and wish you luck! Frogman
