New App, Android and Apple

Hi all I have just had a new BT app approved! The app is an upgrade from my first ever published app, something I originally did in Phonegap. It delivers fun motorsport quips and quotes – mostly F1, with some Nascar and Indy car, set against a backdrop of different car photos. I added a few new features that I thought F1 fans might like and resubmitted to Apple, which is where the fun started. There is a bit of a story to go with it that that I thought I would share with you all. Firstly I was meta-data rejected, but feedback wasn’t specific and as I hardly changed any of that, I asked why. I was told I could not use a specific word and then my binary was rejected. I responded, changed my metadata & resubmitted. I was rejected again and told the problem was the offending word was in the app name. Next, I received a complaint via Apple from the trademark rights holder to the app name. Ouch! The sport I was referring to in the title is a trademarked name and although I thought I was using it in compliance with the published guidelines, I was told I could not use it in the title at all (even with TM). I just wanted to comply and get my app launched, I didn’t see that this was a debate that could be had or won. The name, wasn't an issue before and many other apps in the app store use the same name in the title. I guess Apple are looking more closely at trademarks during app reviews now than they used to; I even found keywords were removed when the app was approved (about which I wasn’t notified). The happy ending part is that the Apple & Android version of GP Motorsport Quotes is out there! Free versions here - http://qrs.ly/ny3blxh (they have adverts). Btw, the link will direct you to the appropriate store if you are coming from Android or Apple devices. There are also paid versions http://qrs.ly/d53blxf without adverts. I didn’t have access to many different test devices, but I believe it handles with different Android screen sizes reasonably. I’d be very grateful for any feedback and of course feel free to leave positive reviews in the Apple & Google app stores, that always helps! Cheers, Alan

I take it 'Grand Prix' is the magic word? Hmm... Congratulations! One of my better friends was married on the yard of bricks, or whatever it's called, at Indy. He's into that sort of thing; I'll let him know about this. Are they two distinct versions? Or is there a 'switch' to go IAP from free (with ads) to paid (without) ? It all looks good! Congratulations on more fine work! Cheers! -- Smug

Cheers Smug. Actually, the word was 'F1' There are two distinct versions, the paid one is without the advert libraries built in. In truth, I don't know how to do it any other way.

Hello Alan, Great app. I just love the way those quotes write out on screen- that is brilliant! Is that special effect part of the phonegap original code, or is it easily transferrable to any buzztouch project? If you feel you can share it, I am working on a charity app right now that would be hugely enhanced by that magic.... Thanks. Chris

Hi Chris Glad you like it. The code that writes out the quotes on screen is in JavaScript, It was a long time ago that I stumbled across it on dynamicdrive.com - I think it was this one http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex10/text5.htm Cheers, Alan

Alan - thanks so much! I think that is one of the very best effects I have seen in a Buzztouch app for a long time! Now for my super beg... I take it that is the html plugin you have used for those pages. Is there any chance you could send me one of those html files for me to base my pages on? (the wonderful shaded box growing on screen and text direction stuff is way beyond me right now) As I said- I am working for free on a water safety/lifesaving charity app due out for drowning prevention week in June. This would make it! Any help hugely appreciated... Chris chris(dot)crowder(at)mac(dot)com

Hi Chris The way this works can go on a hosted web page or build in an html file into your project. You can test it on your desktop and then move it to wherever you need it to be. I don't mind sending you some html at all - I just need to remove all the irrelevant stuff. My son did the css work to round off the corners and make the shaded area grow.
