How to get SMTP email working in v. 2.1.8

There is a bug in the file class.Smtp.php that prevents SMTP email from working. To fix it go to line 208 and change this: if(empty($this->smtp_conn)) { to this if(!empty($this->smtp_conn)) { then upload the new version to your self-hosted server.

There are two modes; the built in PHPMail, and there is an option to use an external SMTP server, which I never could get to work. Annie took the time to figure it out, which makes it nice. You'd send something from your BT Server if there was some kind of auto response, or 'mass' communication from your host ("we'll be shut down for 2 hours on tuesday...") or whatever. Sometimes if you're heavily spam guarded, SMTP is the only viable choice to send mail. Especially if the distant end requires an MX to a mail server, or some other safeguard. Cheers! -- Smug

The email feature is used by the 'Forgot Password?' page, the system sends out an email with the new reset password to the user.
