Plugin for Bluetooth?

Hi: I am a newbee and have not found a plugin in the market that would give me the capability I am looking for. Here is what I want to do.... 1) I want to create an app that will send messages and receive messages from a bluetooth device. 2) The best example I can give is communicating to/from my FitBit. There is an iPhone app to communicate to it, however nothing in Android (which is the environment I am starting with) 3) I suspect it is as simple as calling the native Bluetooth capability on the smartphone and then utilizing a defined API for the FitBit, however I am unsure. If anyone has a Bluetooth plugin, and/or advice to point me in the right direction, I would be very appreciative! Just remember I am a NewBee! ;-) Thank you!

I have looked into some Bluetooth stuff, and it is more complex then it frst seems. First off, you would need to know what device you want to connect to. Is it an open API? What devices can connect to it? Are you looking for low power BT? If so there are not a lot of Android devices out there. IOS has a native Core Bluetooth framework, Android has something similar, but I have not researched much. How to make a connection is documented, but once you make the connection what do you want to do? You would need to write custom code to handle the data collection and then manipulate the data into something useful. This makes it a bit tough to make this a plugin that anyone can just use. Not saying it cant be done, but there are a lot of moving variables there. This is something that peaks my interests and I am looking into it more. If I find something useful I will post it on the form. Jim

You may find the answer here. As daunting as it may look, in a month or two you're going to wonder why you thought it was hard. http://grepcode.com/file/repository.grepcode.com/java/ext/com.google.android/android/2.1_r2/android/bluetooth/BluetoothDevice.java Granted, I haven't played with it yet, but it looks fun :) Cheers! -- Smug

Thanks Jim & Smug for your replies.. Smug - your link looks like a goldmine, i look forward to diving in soon! As I mentioned, as a first attempt I was considering connecting to my FitBit. I found a api website for it at http://dev.fitbit.com/ and I hope to start my adventure there. Cheers! - Binford
