background images for iphone4 & iphone5

I am using the blank screen plugin. I was hoping to use a single image for both iphone4 & iphone5, set to the dimensions of iphone5. I tried to align the image to the top of screen and expect bottom part of image to not be visible on iphone4, since they are the same width. But all the "scale/position" settings I have tried (with the exception of "full screen") zoom the image in a big way. And "full screen" distorts the image (stretching it wider on iphone4). How do I make backgrounds images look good on both iphone4 & 5?

Short of making custom images for each size available, I'd look into 'tiling' a pattern, so it would work with any device. And it might end up looking nicer :) http://www.bobmccune.com/2011/03/08/ios-101-pattern-images/ Cheers! -- Smug

Thanks, but my background has a lot more going on than just a normal background. I have custom images for iphone 4 & 5. Is there a way to use them as is, or do I need to customize the source code to show the correct image for each device? I only see 2 options for images (small & large device).

Thanks Smug, but do I need to code something custom for that to happen? Or do I just specify the name as myimage.png in buzztouch, but make sure all 3 images are in xcode?

yes, the latter. Just call the image by it's name, and ensure the additional images are 'registered' in Xcode, and let Apple deal with it. :) Cheers! -- Smug

When you download your source package, you'll see a whole bunch of images in BT_Art that have the filenames Smug mentions. Those are the mandatory loading images that Apple requires. You can replace them with whatever you want, as long as you preserve the original image sizes and file names. I personally use them as my splash screen. Mark

I've taken Mark's suggestions to heart, and also use them as splash screens... they usually hang out for a second or two while the app is loading; they're perfect. Cheers! -- Smug

Can these images be jpegs instead of pngs for smaller files size and quicker load times? I just saved the same file in both formats and the jpeg is 1/3 the file size. Thanks, Sandy

I think only gif has an issue... and I think that is on Android. Although I only use PNG files, I don't think there is anything stopping you from using jpgs... Try it and see :) Cheers! -- Smug

Thanks! It wouldn't be the first time I've been rejected Apple. At least I'll know what for. Sandy

If you get rejected, it will be something far more trivial ;) Just kidding. Good luck on Apple, they're.... an interesting group. Cheers! -- Smug

I use a combination of JPEGs and PNGs. Both work fine for my iOS development. Keep right out of GIFF. It is an unsupported image type for iOS and Android. However, the image will load, but it won't save the data in cache, so it needs to load every time. I accidentally used it once, and it looked horible.

Thanks Annadale, I never use Giffs except for animated ones and have never tried them in an app. I'm replacing all the default screens with jpeg versions of the following and was trying to see if Apple would have a problem with that. Have you submitted jpegs for these files myimage.png, [email protected], [email protected], etc. in any of your apps ?
