image on main page

Was wondering what would be the best option: I would like my main page to just be standalone page with no link. (tabs are on bottom). However I would like to have it to be good quality. My options i can think of A. direct to a mobile url page with the a high quality graphic covering the page B. Be able to just show a image on that back ie.. make a background image and just show that.. (not sure the size needed though for android or ios.. C. Html page with it directed to a url.png with that full page graphic ( again unknown size) Thoughts.

Hello @jvalley, I would test all options and see what would give you and the user the best quality. LA

I'm thinking you could probably get away with using a background image, with the dimensions for the latest iPhone/iPad. I think it you used the one with the greatest resolution, then it would scale well either up or down. You'd certainly want to test it first to be sure. I think I'd warn away from grabbing the image from a URL. That'll increase load time, and that's not what you want to happen on your very first page. Android will be tougher because there are so many different devices out there. You'll just have to resign yourself to the fact that on some devices, it'll look absolutely terrible, while on many it'll look as you've envisioned it. Mark

The retina image for iOS is 640x1136, so that for sure would cover retina displays. The larger iPad images are 2048x1496. Those might be good places to start.

jvalley, definitely do not mess with url for your home screen. If a user need to wait, user experience is then considered bad, it will send your work to hell, regardless how good your app would be. This business is absolutely based on the first impression. Beautiful graphics combined with easy functionality, no waiting time. For iOS it is good to work with the most used resolution (iPhone 4 and 4S) and iPhone 5. It differs very little, so if you work with 640x1136 for iPhone 5, you can easily cut a little to 640x960 for iPhone 4 and 4S. You can completely forget about the first iPhone and 3G and 3GS screen resolutions (480x320), that hardware is getting obsolete. It may yet live quite a long time in India, China, South America, but it is probably not your targeted market. Do not forget to subtract 20 points from the top for the signal bar for iPhone 4, and I guess 40 points for the iPhone 5, i.e. 640x940 and 640x1096 if I remember well. That is good to make sure that you have pixel on pixel. Just test it, you will see yourself. As far as Android is concerned, I heard about more than 2000 types of devices, some sources say even 5000. Nevertheless, just forget about majority of types and choose 1-2-3 most used devices around you. I would probably include 1280x768 as the Nexus 4, maybe 800x480 like the previous models. If you want to target the wide market of cheap small androids, (ladies like small white or pink devices that look good, but have very catastrophic screen resolution), you must think also of supporting smaller resolution like 320x480 or similar - see below. <a href="http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4666776/android-screen-resolution" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4666776/android-screen-resolution</a> Regardless how many screens are out there, it is impossible to cover all with your hard work. Now I see your night job is Buzztouch! I thought the Sheriff is your friend, these days institutions have little funds to pay for something like this, so usually it means you do the right thing, and that is mostly for free (so called Vatican dollars - God pay you!). I did my first app for Mother's Christian Community Center in my village, if you wanna see it, go to my profile and look for Published Apps, I posted it there. You will probably not understand much, because it is in one of the languages that your inmates speak between themselves in america, huh P). Not really, Slovak is just close to Russian, but there is only 5 million of us and most of us in the US cause rarely problems, unlike our slavic brothers from bigger nations. One more good resource for you: <a href="http://mobile.smashingmagazine.com/2010/11/17/designing-for-iphone-4-retina-display-techniques-and-workflow/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://mobile.smashingmagazine.com/2010/11/17/designing-for-iphone-4-retina-display-techniques-and-workflow/</a> BTW, when I need what we call Consise course to become a Genius in half an hour, I always see the smashing magazine (90% probability they already published top class article about marketing, graphics and anything you may need) and stackoverflow (90% probability your coding problem is well described there). Have fun coding! So see ya outside rather than inside! Frogman

There is a lot of reasons, hehehe, I stand firm on the law and order side! At least there is much more law and order in your country than in mine. Hope there will be law and order coming here one day, but until then I will have a very long beard, and the gransons of my grandsons too! Cheers! Frogman
