Logo Design?

Does anyone have a suggestion for an app I can download to my Mac that will help me design logos for apps I'm creating? I'm brand new to all of this so do not want to spend a fortune on a program like Photo Shop but am unsure how others who are new to this go about designing logos for their apps they are making? Thank you!

Have a look here: http://sixrevisions.com/graphics-design/10-excellent-open-source-and-free-alternatives-to-photoshop/ I know a lot of folks use and love GIMP. All the best.

OH thank you! I read about that a few minutes ago but had never heard of it so wasn't sure if it was recommended. I really appreciate your help!

A few of the folks have been using http://www.Fiverr.com Search these forums to get a specific person recommended on Fiverr to make you a logo for $5. -- Niraj

Oh good idea Niraj! I've used Fiverr in the past for other projects and didn't even think about it for my app. It makes more sense to pay the $5.00 opposed to countless hours of learning another design program. :)

Hi KristinT, good question. We went the same way. There are plenty of community projects that can do basically the same magic for you like professional software for 1k-2k US$. For creating logos you can use http://inkscape.org/, and I personally like www.gimp.org inkscape is great for designing logos, it is very intuitive. (I also can do layers). My wife loves it. Gimp is more an alternative to Photoshop, it can do layers, it provides filters, everything you may need. Great thing is that it has been recently released for Mac too! But you need to invest more time, as it is more powerful and more complicated software. If you have experience with Photoshop, you will be fine very soon. If you want some help, you can talk to my wife. Check her photostream in Flickr: Kaka 81 to see if you like her photo images. Cheers! Frogman

Thanks Frogman! So is a program like gimp just to adjust actual photos that are taken with a camera? I'm looking for a program that will help me design an image from scratch, (although Fiverr is sounding quite good now) using the tools of the software. Does that make sense? Maybe I have the wrong idea of what a logo design software does... hmmm...

You got it right. There are more powerful tools that can do photography jobs like Photoshop or Gimp. Primarily it is used to create graphics and work on photos. It takes quite some time to master it, as there are many options there. Fortunately, you can find a lot of good tutorials in the web that tell you exactly how to do things. It just takes time. A lot of time. There are also other things that are designed for less demanding purposes, for example creating logos or buttons etc. So is inkscape. What you need is something intuitive, what can give you results quickly. Or Fiverr may be a good solution too, but in such case you do not learn it yourself. Someone else does it for little money. If you would like to invest your time into developing, then I would follow the path of learning it myself. If you have a project where you need one logo a couple of screens designed for a small budget, I would hire someone else and concentrate myself on what can bring me most reward and joy. Cheers, Frogman
