Newspaper Page Display on Android

We have successfully built an iPhone application that displays our newspaper pages in PDF format via an html page that links to a PDF (after logging in). We are attempting to replicate such a feature in an Android application. We've been unable to use PDF's for the following reasons: - PDF viewer is not native to Android - Once PDF's are downloaded they can easily be distributed We saved our PDF pages as hi-res JPG, GIF, and PNG images and used an HTML page to display them, but with the built in Buzztouch browser they appear full size (versus fitting to screen) and are illegible. When launching native browser, they are sized to the screen but when you zoom in they are illegible. We were going to play with flash but found that Android no longer supports flash. It's important to keep our paper behind a paywall and thus any method that allows a download and distribution will simply not suffice. Any suggestions?

How did you format your pages? Throw this in the header of your html page and see if it helps... <meta content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0" name="viewport" /> Cheers! -- Smug

Thank you for the suggestion, Smug. I've added that line in the header and i'm still getting the same result. It's quite large and easily read on the PC, but completely illegible on the phone.

We have tried to do that, but formatting PDF newspaper pages as HTML is nearly impossible. The end product is simply not worthy of distribution. Thank you for the suggestion though!

Probably the appropriate answer is to use a mobile format that is different from the print version format (and by format, I mean text layout, etc). That way, you can use HTML5 to display the text in a readable format without having to zoom in. That being said, if you need to keep the same formatting due to the cost of conversion to html, your options are probably the two methods you have already tried (pdf or image). When you tried Smug's suggestion, did you add in JQuery Mobile scripts to the header?

Thank you all for your feedback. We've tested on several devices now and have found the following: - Motorola Atrix: Images load as expected - Samsung Galaxy SI & II: Images load but are illegible - Samsung Galaxy SIII: Images load as expected - HTC Inspire: Images load but are illegible We are now trying to determine what it is about these phones that allow the images to load properly and keeps them legible. Perhaps someone else has run into a similar issue? Is there some sort of minimum requirement we could safely indicate you must have in order to use our app? The link to the page with images is as follows: http://174.120.126.59/~whatsup/previousissue.html Perhaps a few of you with android devices wouldn't mind clicking the link and reporting back if the images are legible for you? Thanks in advance!
