UPDATE Process on page 5 https://www.buzztouch.com/files/howtos/bt-self-hosted-2.1.8.pdf best tip from @mrdavid: print/save your current config.php file as you'll need to enter the info from this into the new one. and still a few bugs being ironed out, check out some of the threads here......

Go through the document. Make sure you don't miss any steps. But otherwise, it's a fairly easy upgrade. 1) Backup all you can. Copy new files over old files (except the 'files' dir). 2) Go through the reinstall. 3) Edit the crap out of your config file. Hope you get through with no issues! Mine was pretty simple. That sounds like you're not connecting to your database... if this is the case, then you're going to want to confirm your database credentials... Check your config.php file, and make sure you've replaced all the placeholders with your valid data... there is a bit to edit in that file, so make sure you put everything in there... 1) Not all of the configuration is completed with the 'server install'. You need to additionally edit your 'config.php' file as well. 2) When you first login, the login credentials should be login: [email protected] pass: buzztouchpro after which, you'll want to change that. Make sure #1 is complete before bothering with #2. Let us know how it goes... Cheers! -- Smug

Okay... this may happen to you... so, I moved to a new server with new DB login and was upgrading to 3.0. All fine until login got: An error ocurred in the db_connect() method in utilityFunctions.php (1) What was happening, during the install, I would add my DB password that ended in # now, all of the password (except the #) would show up on the config.php file causing the error. So, there is either a bug in the install software, or DONT' USE # in your DB password. Took a while to spot it because some of the password transfers over from the first page.
