Now that we have 'Push', who's going to be doing the pushing?

I still haven't implemented push yet, although I will soon enough. Right now, my apps use a wildcard app id, which are not 'push eligible'. Still, looking in my control panel, I see the 'facility' to send a push message, and others are testing. So.... When it's all said and done, I'm curious how others plan to implement push. Will your clients have access to the control panel? Will we need to design/implement some sort of automated 'push message registry' to queue and process messages for our apps? Once you have push setup, what is your implementation plan? Or what ideas have you been tossing around on how to keep from being tied to the keyboard typing messages in the console? I self host, but I don't allow access to my server from the public (at least, not in my immediate plans) so if an App client wants to send out messages, currently the only solution I can see is for me to type the message in the control panel, and set the 'release' date and such. That might be ok for the first few, but I can see that getting to be a bit tedious unless I create some sort of workflow for push processing. Haven't thought it all through just yet; I was wondering what others had plans to do... Cheers! -- Smug

A while back I asked the same question for my apps that have push working from parse.com (Same problem, different place). The best solution I was given was to tell my customers to send me an email when they want to send a push and I do it for them!

Smug, I have been giving this quite a bit of thought, havent come up with a final solution just yet. A couple of options are 1)- as per AlanMac get them to send you an email requesting push notifications, which is fine, because no one (end users) wants to be hassled with push. Then you do it when you have the time, but if they need it out within say 10 minutes for whatever reason. Solution is sending it from your mobile device, have a look at this video I made showing that, you bookmark that webpage (relevant app + push page) and you are able to send a push within a minute. My video on pushing from iPhone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S61wcmoLC-s 2)- If you want to give your customer the functionality to send their own push notifications, have a look at time stamp 1:01 in the Q&A video with David below, your create a special screen that a user has access to only to send push notifications see video below... this will make it easy for you and you can charge for the use monthly etc, BUT you risk the client abusing push notifications to their users, not sure why they would, but they could and they could put strain on your server etc etc video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2ucdjgvHg4#! 3) the solution I plan on using, is as follows; (with a little help from @MrDavid and friends) > get a mobile screen created that will be hosted on my self hosted server, that just has the info you need to send a push notification, > you log in with your admin rights > You choose an app from the list of your apps (list picker) > Enter push details as per push notification page, Ios or Android, design or live, Message, badge number, sound... >Save >confirm It would be great to be able to set time of push to be executed, but all in time... DONE !! Ps option 3 could also work under a user login for that app that would provide them with access only to their apps... HEY, at least i can dream ;)

Hi Smug, I had some of the same thoughts and concerns. I'm working to take the "There's an App for that" approach. I'm working on a buzztouch app that will be a "Customer Portal" app that my clients can install. There will be a password protected area in which they can access a form online to request a push notification be sent. I'm also working on a way for people to log in to their customer account area from the app to keep their info with me current (address, phone, billing, etc. ) I'd want it in the App Store, but if I have to do an ad hoc install that would work too. If I can get it in the App Store I'd price it around $5 to deter people from randomly downloading it that are not my customers. Looks good for my business too, having a Customer Service app in the store. -William

It really depends on the app. If you are using Appoxee to send some rich text with the Push - then maybe you're 'pestering' your users daily with marketing. But these are hopefully 'opt in' folks. I think the fact you have to login and can't just send a PN as fast as a text is a good thing. I use PN very sparingly in apps. One use is a a School Closing "Alert" system (used this AM thanks to 6" of snow!). End users can turn that off and I find they will if you overdo it. I've had to temper clients from wanting to use PN too much. I don't want them in my back-end anyways. That's part of the service they get. I tell them send me a text and I'll send a push. The Parse website is reponsive, works well on phones/tablets. A responsive design for the BT Control panel would be great. Hopefully David get to loo at what parse and Appoxee have to generate and manage/log the PN's and show some stats.
