Payable Content within an App

Hi all, Have been thinking about this for a while now and was wondering if it is possible. I was thinking of an app with the option to unlock 'units' of data from within it - for example a video. So rather than have a separate free and paid app, I was thinking of producing a free app with a number of the pages password protected and offering a buy page linked to payment provider (for example paypal). Does anyone know if this is "allowed" in IOS/Android apps or do you have to offer the upgrades via the store. Hope this makes sense. Regards John PS: apologies if this is the wrong forum to post this in.

Oh yeah. People do it all the time. I've not done it, but it's called an 'in app purchase'. If you google it, you'll probably find far more than you wanted to know. Cheers! -- Smug

Thanks for the input. @MacApple, hadn't seen that before - will have a look into that. What I had in mind was potentially setting up a buy now button in paypal that linked to a Mysql/php DB that would use the device ID to decide if they where able to access the content. My main concern however is that this is against apple rules. Do you know if this is the case? PS: @MacApple - are you an ex-pat? Your published apps seem to tell me you might just be ;)

@Herrnathan Ha! Glasgow born and bred, spent many a good day in your fair city. Go home every year though, 29 yrs there, 8 here. Good to talk to you, think we have crossed paths in the past. Happy days. Have a cool new app coming out in next week or so for my adopted city of Louisville, excited about it. New maps features, new shake features and some other cool stuff. I think so anyway. Apple don't like Paypal. You could hide it and add back in once launched, I know folk thathave got away with it but it's a sticky subject. Like your Avatar, reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLxLmFhROqY

Yeah that's what I was afraid of, will have a look into the other alternatives. I know how tricky it can be to get it through the approval process as it is. Will look out for your next app once its out! That's ma wife's favourite Chewin' the fat sketch! - Set Phasers tae Malky :) BTW, I'm also thinking you might have been as pleased as I was with a certain result today :D

"Set Phasers tae malky" I have confused so many folk over here with that. Pleased? Fell off ma chair laffin'! You guys beat them early in the season as well. Happy wee Jackie got a winning start but wish he had stayed at Thistle. Got many Thistle fans in my family. Poor Sevco.

Being my local team It was good to see the Beanos get one over them this season but being a season ticket at Celtic Park I, like you, had a good giggle at the Sevco game :)

Nice one, very cool. Used to sit in the North Stand Upper from when they opened it until I left for here. Family are in the Jock Stein now, superb seats behind the goal and half way back in the lower. Always get along when I go home. HH buddy.

Gonnae no dae that! Lol. I am a blue's fan. Ah well they are 3rd division now without the same calibre of team so its not too much of a shock. Sure miss the old firm games though! Just don't feel like there is much of league now. Oh well back in a few seasons!
