Newsstand Magazine Subscription

Hi, I'm mapping out the process that a user goes through when looking whether to subscribe to a FREE Magazine on Apple's Newsstand. There are two options: A. Have two buttons. One to see this month's magazine issue for free. Another to subscribe to the magazine for free. B. Have one button to subscribe to the magazine for free. My issue is this: Which method will get me the most subscribers? I think that I will get more people to open a free issue with option A, but they will then have to remember to come back to the app and subscribe. A lot might forget. I think that option B will give me less people clicking the subscribe button than downloading the free issue, but will I get more subscribers? They will not have to remember to come back to subscribe. Have you any experience of this? I'd be grateful to know what your thoughts are. I realise that I will have to go on to test but your input is appreciated:) John PS Option 3 could be Option A but give only a taster magazine and tell people to subscribe to get the whole issue. Would that be too annoying?

I think when people download the your magazine, they should just get the first issue, but then have a button to subscribe for free. So, in that case, Option A. The reason I say that is because if they have only one option but to subscribe, and the end-user doesn't like it, then they are subscribed to you and will have to go through Apple to un-subscribe again. If you give one issue, then they will download it, and if they like it, then they will subscribe. Option 3 is just annoying. I have seen magazines like this and it is annoying if you have to download the full issue, especially when it is free.

The only experience I have of a free subscription is the London Metro newspaper, but it might be an interesting example?

Thanks, Annadale. I appreciate the comments about Option 3, in particular. Annoying users is the last thing I want to do. I might go for Option A and put reminders in the magazine to subscribe. I've worked hard to give great value so, hopefully, it should work. Thanks, AlanMac. I'll check out the Metro. Any other thoughts, especially from direct experience on iTunes, would be appreciated.

Take a look at how the App Ville magazine did it. (I don't remember it's implementation, but it was not annoying) - Niraj

@Higgey - Do you want to attend our next meetup in Oxford in a few weeks time. I see you in the forums a lot and you'd be a great addition to our team. There's a forum thread that started about an hour ago about this.
