Android hardware simulator not working

I have an Android app running in the simulator, and there are 3 rows on the right in the virtual keyboard, one labeled basic controls, the next labeled hardware buttons and the last labeled DPAD. The last two don't allow any input from my keyboard as far as I can say and indeed they have some text next to them that says "not enable in AVD" and to use the physical keypad for entry. Well my physical keypad on the computer does nothing, as I've said. What can I do? Thanks

I'm sure there has to be someone smarter than me around to answer this, but until they show up, I'll have to agree with you; some of those darn buttons either don't work or don't work the way 'I' think they should either. Somewhere in the configuration of the virtual device there is a dropdown that asks for 'buttons'. The choice is hardware or software, and I chose software. Now there is always that huge keypad on screen (regardless of simu-phone screen size), and the 'back' button on that seems to work out ok. It looks a little funky, but it works, and that's all I care about. That might work out for you too. I'm still figuring a few Android things out, and tend to run to my actual device, because it works the way it's supposed to. But I'm going to have to start using the simulator for some devices I don't have access to. Cheers! -- Smug Edit: here's a screen shot of how my config looks: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/115208762/AVD_SoftwareButtons.png

Depending on the emulator your using theres a checkmark to enable keyboard, just click on it and then edit and look, if not your mouse is your input device not keyboard.

every time i click on the keyboard button in the settings for the device, the check mark disappears the next time I open the settings. It doesn't stick.
