PDF opens in iOS but downloads in Android

I read somewhere that the PDF plugin does not display a PDF because it can not on an Android. It shows on an iOS device but only downloads on Android so user has to go find the download and open. Is there no way to preview a PDF automatically on an Android? Thanks, Greg

I just tested this on my device. The Plugin Screen has a button that says 'download' and another button that says 'open'. When I push the 'open' button it opens it in Acrobat. When I hit my back button I return to the screen in my app. Hope this helps! Cheers! -- Smug

Hey @techdesigner, On Android, you need a pdf reader installed on the device or the emulator. LA

Sorry guys, not the PDF plugin, it does show the two buttons as @SmugWimp says. It is when you click on a pdf on the actual site in the Custom URL plugin. It takes you to a New Products page on the site http://transtec.com/transmission_new_products.php and when I click on one of the PDFs it downloads the file then I have to go find it and open it in Android. On the iPad it opens the PDF right in the browser. Brain is mushy. I checked and it also downloads when I am in a regular Android browser instead of opening. @LA I do have a PDF reader on the Android, in fact it gives me the choice of Acrobat, Kindle or PDF reader when I go to open the download. Not sure if there is a setting in the device to open PDFs instead of downloading or web site or in BT. Maybe this is just the way Android does it?

@techdesigner, I think that is a valid question. It has to be Android maybe? LA

This is just the way Android does it. iOS has better support for different document types, while Android requires 'helper' apps (like Adobe Reader or an office product) to open certain types of documents. I've experimented quite a bit, and haven't found a way around it (or any indication that it's any way other than I've experienced). Mark

Thanks @GoNorthWest, I never know if it is a limit of Android or my knowledge of how to work around a glitch. What makes it worse, when the Android app opens a link to a PDF on the site it also brings up a browser with the totally unrelated last page you visited so that the PDF is downloaded in the background. This even confused me the first couple of times it happened. I guess Android users sooner or later figure this out or don't find their PDFs or just buy an iPad ;-D

That browswer-with-the-pdf-in-the-background-thing just happened to me the other day as well on my Nexus! Totally annoying, and it just doesn't make sense at all. Not sure why people stick with Android with functionality like that. Stuff should just work! Mark

Hey guys, Is there any way in the PDF Plugin to auto-open the PDF? Or you have to see the Download/Open screen?

Not at the moment there isn't...but you could probably write some code for it. The problem is is that because Android requires a helper app to read PDF files, and you never know which app people have or will want to use (if they have multiple ones), it's difficult to programmatically open it for them. I've found that Android users are used to the current approach, so I probably wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it. But, if you do find a solution, please share! Mark
