So...Think You Can Build An App? (Challenge)

So, I've built my first android app. Its a restaurant app. It's fairly basic, lunch menu, store locator, feedback form, hours, a tap to call button, and a background image. It took me about 2 days to build it. I'm sure things will get smoother the more I build and began understanding as I am a newbie. Even though I know everybody moves at their own pace, how fast could you build an app like this? Whats the fastest you've completed an app similar to the restaurant app? Or to be more specific, take a look at miss Tila's app: http://www.mobbase.com/app/tila/ Lets say Tila sent you the content and the graphics, how long would it take you? (talking Android)

@HowAreYou, Congrats on creating your first Android App! Not sure how her App compares to a restaurant App. Anyway that would depend and vary with each developer. LA

I put together my 'real estate' app in about 3 days or so. And then the back and forth with the customer is STILL going on, over a month later, lol! Theoretically, we submit at the end of January, which is in a few days. Fingers crossed that all minds can be made by then, lol! Cheers! -- Smug

@LA, Thanks. Its nothing special. Its a very basic app. Oh, the Tila app and restaurant app are similar because both seem very generic. Tila app- video, music, twitter , background image, site, bio, and a home button. Restaurant app- lunch menu, store locator, feedback form, hours, a tap to call button, and a background image. Basically, each have about 7 functions. So for me, an app with 5 functions + a background image took about 2 days (13 hours). @SmugWimp Hopefully it come through for you, my fingers are crossed. Have you had any major issue(s) with your customer?

If you have a solid plan developed for an app, a avid developer can knock it out in less then a day, but on the other note if you have no plan you will spend weeks to months trying to create an app.

@AppMaster Could you tell me what you mean? How do you come up with a solid plan? What is Your method? Do you have a technique that you could share?

@HowAreYou, If she wants an Android App, tell her to get ahold of me. On your App, probably one day if everything was ready. LA

@HowAreYou Actually no 'problems' with the customer... Just the usual 'gee, wouldn't this look great in blue....' and afterwards 'nah... I guess you were right...' Things like that. Mostly appearance. But the app will have his face splashed all over it, so whatever he wants is fine by me. For the most part, it's the 'time between decisions' that eats it all up. It's 'his' app, and it's 'his' deadline, so I'm good. Cheers! -- Smug

What I mean is, for an app to be successful developed you have to know exactly what you want it to look like. Whenever I do an app for a client I have them tell me exactly what they want so I don't waste time.

Write down on paper what your goal for the App. What it will look like with different screens and images/artwork. What button does what and what screen will load. Write everything down with a sketch so you have a goal and design with the potential App. LA

@howareyou, Great work on geting the app done !! Not that its a compo, I built and sent my very first app for review to apple within 90 minutes. (this was after about a month of being introduced to BT and playing around with test apps getting to know how the system works. Probably would be able to do it in 45 minutes with push notifications now if I had a clear understanding of the direction i was going. But I wouldn't expect to make any money of this quickly assembled apps... Its a simple business card/web info page for a friends small book keeping firm, the trick was i just used the info that was available and the colours as per their website. Nothing special about the app. Check it out here bit.ly/papertrailsapp Cheers

Yip doing bits and pieces, I have done one for event company ( an adventure race info app), trying not to give it to them to quickly and lesser the value of my work, BT makes it too easy ;) Luckily I am waiting for the new self hosted version to come out so I can publish it with Push Notifications. My other app that is on the app store is Tri Times ( http://bit.ly/tritimes ) Check out the video review here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=18pCT-7RVO0

Congrats on your app. You could put something like this together in a matter of hours if they sent all the content. I find its better to take a couple of days just to test and re test, get others to test also just to make sure before submitting to Play. As buzztouch makes it so easy after you put in the initial effort to get set up and learn the ropes you could use the trick of gathering multiple clients and tell them you will have the app ready in a couple of weeks. Then they will think you spent ages on it lol.

Good work. I tested out mobBase a lot and it has some nice features - but Source Code is not one of them. Building an app - a few hours. Collecting all the assets, designing all the graphics, testing it on the customers devices, making sure every features works.... THAT is what takes all the time.
