Live vs. design mode problems

So not sure if I am doing something wrong or this is a premature question, but when I make changes in my BT control panel, it automatically updates the app on my phone as before. I didn't chose publish changes and in fact I have a red dot next to "publish changes". So am I doing something wrong? or is this not functional yet which it seems to look like it is? Thanks, Howard

If this is a published app before the live design mode was added then it will not work, the new code would have to be in app before publishing. I believe you would have to do updates to older published 2.0 apps to add this feature. Watch the webinar from 1-8-2013 for a quick look at it.

funny, I was at time 23 min of that webinar and at 27 minutes it is discussed. And now that message makes sense to me. So just to be sure and make sure I do it correctly. I would need to download the source code again into eclipse, which would have the new config.txt file which would include the "live" mode section. Recompile it and then upload it to the market? and this will make the changes? Sorry to be so naive, I am only working with 1-2 personal apps and learning as I go. thanks again, H-

Yes. If your app was compiled before this feature was added then simply re download and compile the code. Make sure you change the "design" to "live" in the config text as shown in your control panel. Then just compile and the "live" version won't see any change till you hit publish. All the best

Just to add anyone still running an older version will still get the updates as before. Only users who update to the new version won't see the design work as you do it.

Oh sorry for the follow up question. So which version will Eclipse sync with, design or live? I used to by-pass eclipse and the emulator because the changes I would do, I would see on my device. I know that is not the best way to do it, but I don't have much downloaded devices out there. But now, this has changed. Most likely I will be now using the emulator more. So if I do make changes in the control panel and refresh the emulator will it sync with without publishing it?

When you download source code its in design mode so you can carry on using your device to test as you always have. Only when you change the design to live in the config text will it be a live app and ignore changes till you hit publish. Just compile in eclipse and leave set to design mode then when happy change the config text to live and recompile before submitting to store. But anyone not update to the new live mode version from store will still see changes before you hit publish. Maybe best to submit new update as is with new live mode and wait a while so most app users have the new live mode. Then you can go crazy without upseting too many users

Thanks Stuck, but yet another question. Do I have to delete the project in eclipse and re-create it with the new config txt, or can I copy the config from control panel and replace the config.txt file in eclipse. Are there other options? Thanks again, H-

and yea, updating the APK file in play with the "live" version is my plan, but just want to make sure I don't screw anything up first.

The way I would do it is. 1. Download the app as it is now to get the new live code and compile a new apk. 2. Upload the unchanged app to Play and leave for a week or 2 or however long you want so enough usersuupdate. 3. Download code again and leave in design mode and update your device with design mode apk. 4. Go as crazy as you wish as only you (and any users who did not update) will see the changes. 5. Once you are happy. Download source code again and set to live. Upload to Play and publish changes so everyone gets them. You probably won't get everyone to update to the new live apk before you start changing initially but at least you won't bother as many while you make changes.
