Unavailable shared library error???

So I was following along with one of the tutorials, the my first app tutorial and I did everything the exact same way that he did it. When I download the source code, compile it and then try to run it on the emulator I get an error saying, "12-31 14:29:33.656: E/PackageManager(65): Package com.monterreyharbor requires unavailable shared library com.google.android.maps; failing! 12-31 14:29:33.666: W/PackageManager(65): Package couldn't be installed in /data/app/com.monterreyharbor-1.apk" I have it set up to use the google API's and not android 2.2 so I don't understand why I'm getting this error about the shared library for the maps functionality of the app. I hope someone can help me with this. I've looked through the forums and couldn't find anything super helpful. Thanks in advance! I've also pasted the LOGCAT output below. 12-31 14:29:31.107: D/AndroidRuntime(279): >>>>>>>>>>>>>> AndroidRuntime START <<<<<<<<<<<<<< 12-31 14:29:31.107: D/AndroidRuntime(279): CheckJNI is ON 12-31 14:29:31.386: D/AndroidRuntime(279): --- registering native functions --- 12-31 14:29:32.666: D/dalvikvm(258): GC_EXPLICIT freed 160 objects / 11728 bytes in 157ms 12-31 14:29:32.776: D/PackageParser(65): Scanning package: /data/app/vmdl63771.tmp 12-31 14:29:33.646: D/PackageManager(65): Scanning package com.monterreyharbor 12-31 14:29:33.656: E/PackageManager(65): Package com.monterreyharbor requires unavailable shared library com.google.android.maps; failing! 12-31 14:29:33.666: W/PackageManager(65): Package couldn't be installed in /data/app/com.monterreyharbor-1.apk 12-31 14:29:33.866: D/dalvikvm(65): GC_EXPLICIT freed 11507 objects / 611888 bytes in 183ms 12-31 14:29:34.006: D/AndroidRuntime(279): Shutting down VM 12-31 14:29:34.017: D/dalvikvm(279): Debugger has detached; object registry had 1 entries 12-31 14:29:34.046: I/AndroidRuntime(279): NOTE: attach of thread 'Binder Thread #3' failed 12-31 14:30:30.577: D/SntpClient(65): request time failed: java.net.SocketException: Address family not supported by protocol

I've gotten that error too; on a simulator. Oddly enough, I don't get it on my actual Android Test Device (Galaxy Tab II). I have no solution; just want you to know 'I' don't think it's 'your' error. Not yet, anyway. I'm not sure what the fix is; I'm kind of on a schedule and since my actual device worked, I wasn't going to get into it just yet. But I will soon, if someone else doesn't find it before I do. And Happy New Year!

It started working. I was reading that sometimes the emulators can be temperamental and I started to mess around with them a little bit by deleting my old ones and making new ones. When I ran the apps they worked with no problems.

Good call. The Android emulators (Apple less so) can be a touch temperamental. Amazing how may problems can be solved with clean, build, restart, rebuild type thing. We all bang our heads and then...... Keep us posted with your progress @MORGANMIKES Almost Happy New Year!

I also figured that since the emulators are so slow I might as well try running/debugging/enhancing the apps on my actual device which in my opinion is definitely the way to go! Thanks for your guys/s support and happy new year to you all as well!

My emergency pc hasn't got the ram to run the emulator, So I was forced to use devices as emulators a few months ago. Wish I'd done it right at the start, I'd have saved literally days of waiting for apps to open.

Lol! I stopped using android device since i got iPhone. So i am forced to test my apps on emulator. Not that i am complaining because the functions on emulator equipped with DMMS of eclipse work like charm and do most what and android device can do.

Just as a by the way I discovered why my simulator wasn't simulating. It was indeed 'My' fault. Summary: In my simulator 'target', I specified 'Android v2.2' rather than 'Google API v8'. I recently rebuilt my computer to accommodate a dual-boot between Mac OSX v10.6.8 (where I have many lion-incapable peripherals) and OSX v10.8.2 (which you need to run the latest greatest iOS dev stuff). I figured I'd just reinstall everything fresh. So in a rush to get back on track, I neglected to double check a few important details... Cheers! -- Smug
