We're working on an app that embeds/saves the images instead of linking through a URL. Once the app is active in the app store, if we want to post new content with saved images, will we have to package and submit a new "version" in order for those saved images to show up for app subscribers? But with respect to various screens and things, the image can be changed from an embedded image to a downloadable image; just remove the reference of the embedded image and put a valid resource in the appropriate 'URL' field, and you should be good. However, understand (and test so you'll see what I'm talking about) that your app will take a performance hit while waiting on resources to be downloaded...
