Possible to host on a local machine?

Hi Everyone, I have been able to successfully install the BT Server on my Mac (a MacBook Pro laptop). I can log in, do some basic things and it all looks like it is working properly. Without an api license I can't really test very far though. My question is, since I'm a "one man band" so to say when when it comes to creating apps with Buzztouch, is this a viable solution for app creation so I don't have to have a dedicated server hosted somewhere? Or does the server have to be live on the 'net for the apps to work correctly? I understand that this would limit external users from using the control panel, but that is not an issue for me. Thoughts are appreciated. William

William, I believe this is possible. However, I think it's the same as hosting a website locally, you need to keep your computer on at all times to have the apps "stay online" (or at least, refresh-able). Depending on how popular your apps become, a better computer might be needed to keep speeds decent for refresh times and update download times for the config files. Should be totally possible and a good free solution. You might need to buy a domain name and point that to your local "server" as your computer. I'm not exactly sure how it's done, sounds like you already have a grip on it. Cheers, David https://buzztouchmods.com

Lots of utilities out there for Dynamic DNS services but on a laptop? You'd burn it out in no time. If you bought an old box and dropped a linux distro on it and used that to be connected 24/7 I'd say go for it in the interim period. Ps Welcome to Buzztouch!

Hi @WillWinter, Welcome to buzztouch! If your laptop isn't on all the time, and you want people to be able to update their apps on the fly, they won't be able to. The reportToCloudURL and dataURL are generally pointed to the server for pushing updates. You could, however, put the config files somewhere else, like DropBox, and have people grab them from there. Then your server wouldn't have to be on. Ultimately, I think it would be tough to run from your laptop. If your apps get successful, and there are lots of calls to the server for updates, you'll eventually get super bogged down (assuming you don't pass some data rate limitation for your plan). Mark

I'll be doing some research into a hosted solution. Mark's response really settles it for me as reliable regular server updates would be important to me.

Hi WillWinter! Welcome to buzztouch! I don't know if it would help or not but I have a paid hosting solution that I set my self-hosted control panel up on. Just check with the hosting provider to see if they provide access to all of the self-hosting requirements found in http://www.buzztouch.com/files/howtos/bt-server-installation.pdf. I would also inquire about the look and feel of their control panel before going with anyone as well. Does no good to have a host with all the bells and whistles if you don't have access to them. If you want the info for my host, let me know. Hope all is well and you have a safe and happy new year!
