Hello to all!

Having just finished the Android Learning Path, I thought it wise to come introduce myself here. I took a moment to review some of the other posts to learn forum etiquette (each site's forum seems to vary), and I have to admit, I am quite impressed with the helpful and encouraging attitude of the members here. I look forward to working with you in the weeks to come. My name is John and I live in Cincinnati. I am interested in Android development. I am using a Linux (Ubuntu 12.04) operating system. I have some experience in software development, but Android is relatively new to me. Again, I am looking forward to working with such an excellent group of people and I hope you have a great holiday season!

Welcome to BT my good man! Not too far from you at all, a hop skip and a jump down the road. You are right about the community on here, I've never encountered one like it. The code is tight, the community warm and be possibilities endless. Good to see a Linux man as well! Dabbled with Redhat in the past. Seems like forever ago now. Anyway, don't ever hesitate to shout and someone will dive in. See you have a couple of stars already, good man! Enjoy the holidays with that sweet lil bambino (I assume it is your kid and not some random cute baby pic!) and no doubt speak with you soon. Peace

Hey John, Welcome! I might not be able to help you with Linux but I can help you with questions and problems you might encounter. Happy to "meet" you John. LA

Greetings! Our resident guru made this awesome video to install the Android SDK on Ubuntu. Very good stuff. I don't see a lot of BT/Ubuntu folks here, but I live on the command line for a good chunk of the day and run a linux shop. http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=169DA1F0CE08FC1661B4AD6&command=isSearching&currentPage=1&topicTitle=ubuntu&createdBy=&repliedBy=&minViews=-1&maxViews=-1&minReplies=-1&maxReplies=-1&forumCategory= I run Eclipse/Android SDK on both Win and Mac and find them to both be slow. I tried it on Ubuntu to see if any difference and about the same. I'm virtualizing a bunch of desktops on my network and built a couple of VM's running Ubuntu and loaded the SDK up there. XEON Dual Sandy Bridge. Hoping to see that Android Emulator snap right up and launch my stuff when I get a chance to play with it more.

@ MacApple: Thanks for a hearty welcome! Yes, that is Isaiah, my new son. As far as the stars go, I wanted to finish the Learning Paths before jumping right into the forums. I feel I have a pretty good grasp of the material, but will definitely be reviewing it from time to time. I'm not sure how interested I am in going down the Apple/Mac road yet. Android seems to fit better and suits the devices I already have. @ LA: No worries! I am pretty adept at Linux. However, I will no doubt be calling soon when I get jammed up. It is likewise nice to "meet" you as well. @ ATRAIN53: Thanks for the link. I already have Eclipse/ADT/AVD/SDK installed an operable. As far as the way Eclipse runs cross-platform, I think it has to do with the way Java makes its calls to the runtime installed in the system and how the kernel manages memory functions with the IDE, but I could be wrong. I am quite good at being wrong from years of practice. :) As far as the Android Emulator goes, I have an AMD Phenom CPU and the Emulator still pegs out to 99% on startup. The answer may lie in adding the emulator(64 or 32, whichever architecture you run)-arm process to your startup script. I would be interested in hearing how that server CPU chews through it though. @ianjamespiano: Thanks Ian. Likewise. @ everyone: Thank you all for such a warm reception! I look forward to working with you.
