How make right nav bar icon go to home screen?

I am trying to set up the "home" or "rewind" icons, when used as the right navigation bar icon, to NOT load the specified screen but instead to go "home". I've managed to do this in other apps by inserting the following code: [self.navigationController popToRootViewControllerAnimated:YES]; However I can not get it to do anything but cause errors with the right nav bar icons. Any suggestions BT community??
