To bin or not to bin, that is the question

Hi Folks, Many moons ago I wanted to develop for Android and sort of started installing Eclipse and the lot. The problem is that I never got around to finish the process as my priorities changed. Now, I have more time to do it properly AND I have the brilliant "buzztouch for Android" guide by GoNorthWest to help me. I am not sure what I did and where I left the process (I can see that I have Eclipse installed though)- Should I bin it all and start again? If yes, how do I do that? If no, how to I check if the process was completed? Thanks for the pointers. Farcat

Hey @farcat, I must admit I like your post "question". I am an Android developer and I do encourage you to start again. Check out @GoNorthWest profile and he has a list of different guides and videos. Also there is a new bundle package for Eclipse that makes installation and the environment a little easier. LA

Hi @LA, Nice to hear from you again! Thanks for your reply. I'll put my Google search cap on to find the best way to remove Eclipse from a Mac then. I just checked @GoNorthWest's profile and there is a mine of info in there (it's a bit scary actually..) Cheers, Farcat

Hi farcat, Glad your back. @GoNorthWest makes it easy for you and breaks everything down. Here is this video @GoNorthWest made on the new Android SDK on windows, but I'm sure you can find or relate it to a Mac. Twenty Minute Tutorial : Installing The New Android SDK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFGF3_r9YIA LA

Hi @Farcat, Welcome back to the work of Android! I'd go ahead and bin Eclipse and start over. You can just delete the folder that contains Eclipse and/or Android, since there is no official install program. Then download the new Eclipse ADT from Google, unzip it, double-click the Eclipse icon, and you're off and running! It's that simple! You will want to download the Google API in your Android SDK...the video @LA references shows you how to do that. Post if you have any questions! Mark

Mark, I am following your video as per @LA reference. I have downloaded the package, unzipped so I have Eclipse and Sdk in the same folder, launched eclipse, reconfigured the view. Next step is to launch "Android SDK manager" going through "Window". My problem is that I cannot see Android SDK manager. In the console I can see two error messages: "[2012-12-19 09:07:58 - Gib Wifi] Unable to resolve target 'Google Inc.:Google APIs:8' [2012-12-19 09:07:58 - Gib Wifi] Unable to resolve target 'Google Inc.:Google APIs:8'" "Gib Wifi" is the name of the app I was trying to run on my previous install many moons ago. Any idea as to what is wrong?

Hi Farid, If you can't see the Android SDK Manager, it basically means that Eclipse doesn't know where to look for it. So, go to Window > Preferences, then click on Android (hopefully it's there), and browse for the SDK location. If that doesn't work, make sure you've downloaded and installed the newest ADT Bundle from Google. They have everything combined into one, and all the paths are just there. You can grab it here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html All you need to do is unzip and go. Everything should be there. Send me an email if it doesn't work out, and we can do a TeamViewer session. Mark

Thanks Mark for helping me out installing Eclipse. Not sure I know what you did but it seems to work! When I run my project I come across 100 errors of 160 items. I read that the app source code contains all the plugins code that I have in my control panel, right? So, the source code also includes the IOS-only plugins that I have. Is this generating the errors? If so, what is the correct method for deleting the offending plugins files from the source code? In Android - Project built Target I have "Google APIs 4.2" selected. Thanks, Farcat

Hi Farid, Those aren't errors, but warnings. Unless you have errors that prevent you from actually compiling and running your app, you can safely ignore them. Most apps will compile with hundreds of warnings in them, usually pointing to deprecated code and other things. Not to worry! Mark

Hi @LA, Mark, I am looking at the problems tab and I read 161 errors, 490 warnings. If I drop down the Errors line I get a long list of (I assume) errors. How do I copy and paste them so I can post them? Cheers, Farcat

Before you do that, try this: Right-click on your project, select Android Tools > Fix Project Properties. Then do a Project...Clean from the menu bar. See if any of that helps.

Ha! You're heading in the wrong direction. ;-) I'm out until later this afternoon...perhaps we can do a TeamViewer then? If you can figure out how to save and post some of the errors, please do. Mark

He he, i figured there was something wrong... Teamviewer for later sounds good if you have the time. I'll post a few of the error messages in the meantime. :) Cheers
