opinions on android ad revenue?

Ok. Tried revmob on two apps. Almost 1000 downloads on one app and my most recent app launched hit almost 100 downloads in first two days. My problem is revmob has so far returned zero, zip, nada in revenue so I wanted to ask anyone with experience which ad network returns highest revenue for android apps. Thanks

Not sure what problem you have? If people don't click adverts, you get no money, it doesn't matter which network it is. Most cpc networks are much the same, they claim high eCPM's but they'll all even out to a dollar or two per eCPM over time.

@raveyd so about 1100 installs is normal to earn no installs or revenue. Sorry im New to the whole advertising thing. Just wanted to know if that's normal or all ad networks return same. Thanks buddy. Hopefully will see some return soon. Do you recommend any one over the other for the android platform. Just looking fir opinions from folks with more experience like yourself who have ads running and generating a steady income from them. Thanks for reply. I will stick with it then and see how it goes then.

To be honest mate, for steady income, admob is as good as any other. They don't claim super great eCPM's, but they've got the largest advertiser base of quality advertisers, the best range of attractive banners, great fill rates, they're google so they integrate well, and easily, into android apps. Possibly 1100 installs with 0 earnings is a little abnormal, but if they're installing the app but not re-opening it, it would make sense. Are you self hosted or on bt? The page views on bt is a good indicator, also the ad network should report impressions. As a really simplistic guide, the more page impressions/views you have, the more you should earn, so installs isn't really a good indicator - you might have 10 installs that are used constantly and might earn more than 1000 installs that are never used!

Thanks. Am i right in thinking admob pay per click and not by install? Might be worth trying out instead of revmob. Thanks again

Yeah, admob are cpc. Revmob are mostly cpa I think. CPA used to be great because you could force installs/offer completions by locking screens, but gplay changed their t&c's recently to stop that practice :(

On a plus note though. I released a free version of a paid app. My paid app at current purchase rates look like it could earn me between $30 - $50 per month

I agree with what Rave says. My experience with revmob too was not so good for andorid. The first ad network i integrated into my apps was admob. I was new in all this thing and Rave's help in integrating admob in my apps was a huge help that time. The admob revenue earning is less compared to other services but it is the safest bet out there. Besides admob i use startapp and this has been the main source of earning revenue from my apps. This is mostly because startapp pays you when users download your app. Till date i earned about $ 75 from admob and about $ 320 from startapp.

Thanks folks. Maybe i will try some other ad network then. Just another quick question. Say i wanted to make an app for a famous person how do i get round copyright law to play maybe an mp3 or display a picture and is it ok to link using launch native app to take app users to their website?

Using mp3 or picture which are copyrighted may create a problem. The best approach would be to contact that person directly and tell your idea of creating an app and ask his permission / consent to use his copyrighted material. If you just want the users to direct a link to the persons page, then i think that should not be an issue using the native browser.

Thanks. Thought you may know a way round it as you used images of Justin beiber in one of your apps. I think to build the app i would need to be able to use at least an image of the person without breaking copyright law. Any suggestion?

Well most of the images on the fan pages are free to with fair use. Just check the policy of that website then you will be able to get an answer as to whether they allow a fair use of the images.

@Sandeep - if you add admob to the xml have you tried SMART_BANNER instead of BANNER? It's in the latest sdk and resizes ads automatically depending on screen size and orientation. It's cool. @Mr Stuck - Tricky subject - fair use policy is so ambiguous. Think about the worst case scenario (account deletion) and decide if it's worth the risk.

That's great! Imagine if the app gets endorsed by the band too, earnings would go wild! You can pay for the all inclusive bt meetup in the seychelles :)

Hey Rave, Yes i add banner ads for admob through the xml coding instead of coding it in class files. I did not knew about the smart banners. Hmm... thanks, i will give it a look.

It's worth it for just a one word change Sandeep! Same banners but nicely centered with a full width background so they look more like part of the app, and larger centered ads on tablets instead of a little 300x50 stuck in the corner! btw, I was messing around with admob the other day and got the code working in the tabbed layout file, between the tabs and the action bar. Only the one bit of xml code for ads to appear on every screen, don't know why I didn't think of it sooner! Great place for clumsy thumbs! https://dl.dropbox.com/u/56760890/Untitled-2.png

Is it possible to use both admob and Revmob together in same app? I get around 30 clicks per day in my new app but only two installs out of hundreds of clicks so think it may be better to go with pay per click service. Can you guys recommend the best guide to easily integrate admob. Thanks again

Hey @Mr Stuck, that code I posted above is pretty much it! In addition, in the xml file, just put: xmlns:ads="http://schemas.android.com/apk/lib/com.google.ads" after: xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" and in the manifest, somewhere between the <application> tags put: <activity android:name="com.google.ads.AdActivity" android:configChanges="keyboard|keyboardHidden|orientation|screenLayout|uiMode|screenSize|smallestScreenSize"/> Finally, change your build path to google api level 13 or higher (right click project > Properties > Android > tick api level). Apart from adding the jar file, which is the same as adding any other jar file, that's it!

Thanks. Will give it a try and call out if i need any further assistance. My free app is getting around 500 installs a week and clicks are steadily increasing but with no installs revmob seems to be ineffective for revenue. Is it ok to run both?

Feel free to call out, but honestly, once you've added it once, it'll take 3 minutes next time! By far the easiest network to integrate. What does revmob do? You can have both, but two banners on the same screen wouldn't be too good. If revmob pops up or opens on a button click or something, it'll be ok to have both, but it's a delicate line between max revenue and annoying the user if you have multiple ad networks in play. A lot depends on the type of app, some app niches can stand a lot of advertising. You'll be the best judge of your niche. Funny, revmob were all over the forum a while ago when they were drumming up business, but they seem to have disappeared recently.

I have Revmob set up to display a full screen advert every 5 screen taps but no banners so running both won't really annoy users anymore than just running revmob. Thanks. Will get to work on it tomorrow if i get time (xmas shopping)

@Sandeep do you find you get less installs after you added startapp? And do you get many complaints/uninstalls because of it? Just curious to know before I add it as seems like it could make me a bit if cash. I get up to 500 installs per week on 1 app so might very a winner.

The number of installs for most of my apps remain same. I did not receive even a single complaint from my users regarding the number of permissions this sdk requires. In any case you can use it in one of your app to test how your users react with the startapp and if they are fine with it, you can later add it in other apps. As of today i have 23 live apps and i have used start app in 20 apps.

Quick question. In admob where it states android package url, is this just the link from Google play or does it have to start with market//

It is google play url but instead of http:// they use market// so that when you start your own ad campaign, and want the users to tap on your in house ads, they will be taken directly to your app via the default google play app on their mobile instead of browser.

You can leave that field blank if you like. After you've filled in the captcha at the bottom, the next screen will have the sdk download.
