Open up your terminal b. cd to the folder you have the key placed in c. sudo chmod 400 nameofkeypair " Can I assume I cmd drag the file holding the key into terminal then type sudo chmod 400 'nameofkey' Just wanted to double check. Many thanks.

Hi Alex@TM, I cannot answer your question, but it seems like you are one of the few who might be able to answer another forum post posted by a student at the high school where I teach. I would PM you, but you don't have that set up. Will you please help us answer the question to the following link: https://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=4C0AE1B5CAA8ECFADA698BD&command=isSearching&currentPage=1&topicTitle=ec2&createdBy=&repliedBy=&minViews=-1&maxViews=-1&minReplies=-1&maxReplies=-1&forumCategory= Hopefully....thank you in advance. :-)

You wouldn't be able to drag it. When it asks to 'cd' it wants you to change your directory, think of it like the command line equivalent of using a file explorer. You'll want to navigate where the file is stored. For example: cd ~ \\Takes you home, your main directory. Whereas: cd /user/files/documents/ \\Takes you to the folder named 'documents' Because you are probably new to UNIX based commands, you may want to use 'cd dir examplefoldername'. People tend to do better with the 'dir' command, as it can navigate to a sub-directory that you're already in. I sure hope this helped.

Thanks Mosef. This has helped to a degree! I'm not sure what the instruction is telling me to do. I have typed ~/destop/Key I have typed as you suggested. Not found! I can feel at least a day on this coming on!!

@ALFREA: I commented on the "other thread" you referenced. @Alex@TM: Amazon (and other Cloud Services) are wonderful. BUT, they are generally far more complex to understand than standard web-host solutions like GoDaddy, BlueHost, and loads of others. If you want to run your own virtual server in the sky...OK. But, after seeing your first post in this thread, I'm thinking the command line's gonna frustrate you? As an alternative, you could easily setup a ten-buck a month account on a simple webhost and use their fancy pants GUI to manage everything about your new account (like permissions, databases, file systems, etc). I know for SURE you can figure out any approach, just thinkin' it may be easier to start with a webserver that's already running :-)

I think you might be right David! I figured out the cd problem I was having, just a case of understanding the directory but then fell down at point 36 where it asks to point your domain to this ip address. I wrongly though I could do this as is and without a website. I'm sure i'm completely confused now! If I go down the 'godaddy' route, is there straight forward instructions to achieve the same end?! Cheers David :)

You can also use the best of both worlds. Control simply your hosting like David suggests, Godaddy, hostgator etc. Then point your static files , images, pdf etc to à CDN like amazon cloudfront, rackspace for fast downloads
