Twenty Minute Tutorial : Installing The New Android SDK

Too much to keep to under five minutes, but hopefully this is worth your time. As many of you know, Android release a new SDK that includes Eclipse! It doesn't involve an installer, just unzipping some files, and kicking off Eclipse. It's super cool, and super integrated! And, it's super, super, super easy to get going now! Android finally does something right! I whipped up a quick tutorial, going from installing Java through installing the SDK and configuring the Android Emulator. It's all there, in a short 20 minutes! I'll be writing up a doc soon as well. Here's the link: http://youtu.be/SFGF3_r9YIA Enjoy! Mark

(god I hate when that happens, posting on a clients account!) Loving the words quick and short used with a 20 minutes video! ;p Awesome awesome awesome tutorial, I didn't find myself going back too many times, instructions were clean, detailed, and easy to follow. Super thanks for this one Mark, you're making my whole transition to android much more bearable. Cheers mate! David https://buzztouchmods.com

Glad it's proving to be helpful! Always open to constructive criticism. I would whip one up for Mac, but mine is a 32-bit Mac mini, and of course it's only available for 64-bit. Anybody want to get me a newer Mac mini? ;-) Mark

God bless you! I tried to install android SDK yesterday for first time, suddenly I came across this new version, without knowing that it was a bit different concept than previous, and I wondered why all the tutorials I found talk to me about 'things' I didn't see in my screen!! Lots of thanks again, great contribution.

@Marko - This new ADT sure makes the install process much, much easier. Not sure what I'm going to do with all my free time that used to be helping people set things up via TeamViewer! And this, of course, doesn't help the myriad of other problems and frustrations you'll encounter doing Android dev! Mark

Thanks Mark- do you advise on the Mac to remove eclipse or install the ADT over an existing install. I have picked up a nexus 7 and haver to say how impressed I am with androids new OS. Very exciting times. And it may be sacrilege but Steve Jobs was wrong on small tablets, the same way I was wrong in thinking that buying a book on C was as useful as spending time on Buzztouch. (The bbok has taught me how to say 'Hello world", Buzztouch and the forum have helped me craft 5 apps!!)

Hi Marko, The new package only works without an existing IDE like Eclipse. If you already have a working environment, I'd just leave it alone. Otherwise, uninstall everything and start with the new package. Mark

@GoNorthWest yep! but sometimes, the AVD didn't start up, so I had to re-install the whole thing a couple of times... but we are talking about android/windows, so... we know the deal! ;)

@Funktomas - Yep, Android may have improved the install process, but it doesn't seem like the AVD's are all that much better at starting up!
